A Look Back on Black History

A Look Back on Black History

A Poem by Lashanna

I look back on black history underneath the borough,
I search to remember our black heroes,
People have forgotten them or maybe just surpassed,
However I've come to talk about it at long last.

The words from "I have a dream" to a poem entitled "Still I Rise",
The words magnify my thirst for equal rights and I remember I have diamonds at the meeting of my thighs,
These people casted a shadow over inequality and the voices of those who praised it,
If they hadn't done those things the society we live in now would change quite a bit.

Without these influential and strong black men and women,
Our world today wouldn't be so equal driven,
Without these influential and strong black men and women,
Who would have fought for this image?

This image conveys a world where change is still on the rise and going strong,
This image is like a beautiful theme song,
It says that this month is not just another assignment to write,
Instead it is to symbolize and call out for equal love despite fright.

I look back on black history and smile,
The fight to get where we are today wasn't as smooth as a lily floating on the Nile,
No matter if days to come bring only stress,
As Frederick Douglass said, "If there is no struggle, there is no progress".

You are right. Many great men and women died for us to know freedom.

I hope we don't allow the government to steal back the goals/dreams of the men like Martin Luther King Jr. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
