Heart of Stone

Heart of Stone

A Poem by Whiskurz

Today I found a heart of stone
Just lying on the ground
I picked it up to hear it beat
But it didn't make a sound
I wondered who had left it there
Some poor heartbroken soul?
A heart that's forgotten how to love
And turned as black as coal
Today I found a heart of stone
Just like the day before
I put it in my hiding place
And quickly shut the door
I wondered who had left it there
This heart so petrified
And how long did it suffer,
Before it finally died?
Today I found a heart of stone
A "You don't love me shrine"
It hurts too much to pick it up
This heart of stone is mine

Wow! I have come across heart shaped stones, but never thought of them in this perspective. Amazing poem. I love the the simplicity, the flow, the compassion in this poem. I think the next 'heart" stone I find I will not just pass it by. Perhaps that can also be said about the "stone hearts" in our lives?

A hard look at one's soul. Such a hard thing to realize, yet... the line "It hurts too much to pick it up" leads me to believe that heart hasn't completely turned to stone. The owner maybe has lost the ability to see clearly or hear well enough to capture that faint beat?

How many people realize too late that love is needed?
I much perfer the idea that a heart of stone is dead rather than a heart of stone is someone who refuses to love, it's a bit more sad (sadder?) . . . But the heart is fragile and strong at the same time . . . and will go in search of those alike to find comfort.

the images, the voice, the flow all so good. I was particularly moved by the word shrine in...A "You don't love me shrine" it conjured the idea of idolising a mindset. Nice write. Enjoyed.
