The Shelf of Sadness

The Shelf of Sadness

A Poem by Whiskurz

I was going to write a sad poem
But my nephew shot himself
So I'll guess I'll wait 'til later
And I put it on the shelf
I finally took it down today
But before I started to write
I got a call from a friend of mine
His daughter died last night
So on the shelf it went once more
To wait 'til grief has passed
Again I took the paper down
To write my sorrow at last
But as my muse began to cry
A knock came at my door
A neighbor came to me in tears
Her husband killed in the war
I never wrote that sad poem
It sits upon the shelf
Sadness needs no poet at all
It somehow writes itself

Beautiful poem and it's so true. Your last two lines are wise and very well written. Wonderful job!

The last two lines are true... You never had the chance to write that sad poem because sadness write it by itself. "Action speaks louder than words."

welcome :)
This is moving, and yet it does not take itself too seriously. It seems to mock the very grief that makes it so good.

Whisk you are good. Here's to hoping, that maybe you can get that book out soon, and write something that is happy.

The reflections here are so sadly striking... how the news of every day overflows with sadness... and your last lines are so powerfully poignant.

Yes, sadness does have a way of writing itself and visiting us all at the most inopportune and unsuspecting moments. Wonderfully creative, writing a poem on the sadness of sad poems. great flow to the tale. All the best poems, no matter how difficult to write, seem effortless, as if they write themselves. This is one of them. great job.

Color me jazzed, this is very clever. So sad, so true, life does trip us up and get in the way, even of our sad songs....but your poetry is inspiring nonetheless. Nicely pen'd Whisk, like this one a lot.
