soul of my soul

soul of my soul

A Poem by Cate Winter

blood of my blood

clad in furs of bear
and wolf

carved ships with dragon's heads
with calloused hands
and
burning hearts

sails taut as saltspray
carved
runes into pale skin
  freckled from sunlit hours of
working
 earth into grain
   steel into swords

ancient songs in
a new world
  where trees kissed the
sky
 still echo softly through
stands of gnarled pine

bone of my bone

raven haired
 golden skinned
sons and daughters from a land
of sun and pomegranates

crossed wind-curst waters
  to lands unknown

armed with blades, words,
healing herbs
 and secrets of the stars

voices dark and rich
as wildflower

honey

 singing history into
each child's dreams

flesh of my flesh

my cheekbones
my thighs

the shape of my hands,
my face,
the amber in my eyes

the waters of your travels reflected
in the blue of my veins

waters broken
  birthing my bloodline

flow through me like fire
