Of All ThingsA Poem by Beth ElainaYou ever get that feeling that you could pretend you're okay if everyone would just stop making eye contact with you?
Listen to me
When I tell you I'm fine
Look at my mouth
See that I'm smiling
Watch how I stand
I can hold my head high
But please, of all things
Don't look in my eyes
Look at my feet
Planted firmly in place
Watch my hands closely
I won't fidget or shake
Listen to my voice
You won't hear me sigh
But please, of all things
Don't look in my eyes
You might see the tears
I never learned to control
You might see the pain
I've been facing alone
You'd see past the mask
I've been hiding behind
So please, of all things
Don't look in my eyes
