Of All Things

Of All Things

A Poem by Beth Elaina
"

You ever get that feeling that you could pretend you're okay if everyone would just stop making eye contact with you?

"

Listen to me
When I tell you I'm fine
Look at my mouth
See that I'm smiling
Watch how I stand
I can hold my head high
But please, of all things
Don't look in my eyes

Look at my feet
Planted firmly in place
Watch my hands closely
I won't fidget or shake
Listen to my voice
You won't hear me sigh
But please, of all things
Don't look in my eyes

You might see the tears
I never learned to control
You might see the pain
I've been facing alone
You'd see past the mask
I've been hiding behind
So please, of all things
Don't look in my eyes

Oh man! And they always do damnit ... they always look in your eyes.

YES!
Your rhyme scheme is deceptively simple, but packs a punch. Each word is perfectly chosen, integral. I would've expected nothing less. More please.

I had the same thoughts as Beth. Damn hard to put into words, especially when it's happened to you: Someone who could no longer look into your eyes.

I love it.

It conveys what so many of us feel, but can't put into words.
