Millie Across Rockaway Blvd

Millie Across Rockaway Blvd

A Chapter by Lafayette

When Millie ran past Rockaway Blvd

Her sister stood fast against the willow

The fear in her eyes Millie’s pleasure

What fright over coming her mother

Her fathers hate, a small boy, in first love

They killed five hundred last night

Maybe they’ll round up the wounded tomorrow

We never see them though.

I thought of you, my love

I want to kiss your lips, at least once

Maybe twice

To steal a sweet kiss in the crowds of the coat room

The school is pile of red brick, used to reinforce the wall

The flowers kill, oceans flooding red

John asked me if I saw

Did I see your paintings?

I told him yes.  I lied

I couldn’t tell your face after so long a time

Only the remembrance, your lap in mine

Would still be fresh, the gentle sway of your hips

An old yellow bus and never enough time

The ride home from day camp, the best of times

The children can’t seam to find enough to eat

Even though they pick clean, the river of human sewage

Bombs still falling on the third stairwell

Dam those summer vacations
