I have a hard time sleeping after my nap, It is still early so I pick up the phone and call Emily. It rings a few times then she answers, “Hey.” I am trying to assess her mood but I can’t so I say, “Hello” and wait for her to respond.

She says to me,

“So Valery, you’re going to be married!

How exciting. Have you set a date? I smile because this is an upbeat conversation topic and I quickly tell her, “day after tomorrow!” She is giddy and I can tell she is happy then I hear her squeak! “I get to come right!” I laugh and reply to her, “of course! Emily it wouldn't be my wedding without my best friend there to see it!”

We sit on the phone that night talking like we haven’t in years and I feel sad when it is time to hang up. I know I am going to miss her. We talked about everything. From my wedding to her move and I felt tear well up in my eyes. It was like losing another family member and I burst into tears. She is crying too. We finally say our goodbyes and I lay in bed still sobbing. I am losing my best friend.

As I lay in bed I remember birthdays, holidays, breakups, and first dates, I remember talking about the first guys we ever kissed. I then chuckle to myself because looking back now it’s like what where we thinking. I remember our first loves and sleepovers where we stayed up all night. She was my best friend and I had only one more night to make memories with her that we would one day tell our children!

I look at the clock and it’s nearly midnight so I try and turn off my brain to sleep. I finally drift off.

Next morning I wake up and find Emily and my mom down the hall in the living room and they have been talking for a while. Emily smiles as I walk into the room “Good morning sleepy head! I was wondering if you would ever wake up.” I look at her and smile “I was up all night talking to my best friend I tell her.” She gets the joke and hugs me! Mom says, “I have decided to let you skip school to prepare for your wedding tomorrow Valery and Emily’s mom has agreed to let her stay home to help you. So have a great day I am off to work!” I smile at my mom and she leaves.

First things first I must get dressed. I look at Emily and she says, “Get a move on slow poke we have plans and only a few hours to get them planned.” I laugh and run back to my room. I quickly grab a pair of jeans and I grab my favorite black cashmere sweater, throw on my boots and brush my hair. I am back out in the living room quickly. We discuss where we plan to go first and she is dead set on me getting a dress. So I know that’s what today is about.

We make it to the bridal store and Emily wanders off to find a few dresses she likes for me to try on. I look for a dress suiting a maid of honor!  We meet at the dressing room. I have found three dresses and she had found four beautiful gowns. I walk into the dressing room and try on the first dress. It is an eggshell white with beautiful embroidery, silk trim, and strapless it is nice but I think this is just not me. I then try on one of the others, it is a simple design white with long sleeves and red trim, it is very elegant and I love it. However I know she will be upset if I miss trying on all of them so I pick up the final dress and I try it on. It is a white dress with silver trim, has small amount of bead work around the neck line and a medium length vail and I know without doubt this is the dress. I walk out the dressing room and Emily gasps, “You are a vision! That dress is the one, its perfect!”

We smile at one another and I nod and tears prick my eyes! This dress is perfect and I love it! Then I tell Emily,

” You must try on my three picks.” She nods and picks up my first choice. It’s a beautiful yellow with sheer long sleeves and it flows its very simple and beautiful! She then takes in the dark blue with silver trim it is a bit flashy but still beautiful. She smiles because she knows it is one of her favorites and I laugh then she picks up the last dress it is a bold red, and it has a small white belt, long sleeve, with a beautiful scarf and she smiles but picks the blue! We have our dresses and head to look at flowers.

As we walk through the town we get to a flouriest Emily says,”You should go traditional with multicolored roses.” I love the idea. It is simple but very nice and standard.  I smile and tell her, “ it is a great idea and we get our flowers and then I go to the simple jewelry store and I find a simple white gold band that will be my husbands and Emily I head back to my house! Once we get to the house Emily and I collapse on the couch. She says, “We have had one of the most memorable days shopping laughing out loud she hugs me and hops to her feet. “I have to go home now, I will you early tomorrow morning! Get some rest.” I laugh and with a huge giddy smile tell her bye.

The night goes on and I think of the day. I spent all day with my best friend planning my wedding which is tomorrow! It is going quickly It’s only been three weeks. Who knew three weeks could change your life so much! I get ready for bed and start to drift I think of Derek, and what his day was like. Before long I am fast asleep.
