The Leaving Ballad

The Leaving Ballad

A Poem by JessicaRose

I left the frosty New York skyline
on crystalline mornings. I couldn't handle the clarity,
didn't want it.
I knew there was no place for me:
enmeshed in structure, cold concrete,
humid air - suffocating and cloying.

So I left
in search of a place
as wile as my spirit.
I needed the possibility of the earth moving under my feet,
waves coming in quick and washing me out to sea,
the chance of fire immolating me in my bed.
I needed the possibility of waking to a world
that wasn't the one I was lulled to sleep by.
I needed the possibility of sudden, utter calamity
to keep my soul
utterly calm.

I feel we all need to live in a place which matches our soul. I live in the city, but I journey up to the countryside every week or so, just to get a fresh space. A place of calm, away from all the chaos of the city, all of the people & constant movement. I love the city, but it just easily gets to be too much for me at times & I can never be calm if too much is going on or if I feel too confined.
