A Birthday ReflectionA Poem by CathleenBA message for a friend on his 59th birthdayBirthdays A time for reflection Looking just to see what is there. Looking inside To see what we have become Looking around To see how we have touched our world Looking again To see how that same world That Sweet Old World Has touched us. A time for looking back To remember where we have come from And of looking forward To ponder where we might go next. It is a time for reminiscing About the people and events Who have made those indelible marks That have made us who we are today. It is, perhaps, a appraisal of the pain That prodded us to move on to happier places Or an assessment of the joy That buoyed us through choppy waters. A glimpse at the tears That washed our souls so we could see more clearly A review of the laughter That nourished us along the way Or a perusal of the smiles That lit the corridors of our journeys. There are a multiplicity of factors That make us who we are Most days we do not even pause To consider those things at all Much less ponder and savor them However, A Birthday is a time to do just that To Ponder and appraise, To glimpse, or gaze as time allows To review and evaluate and assess Even if just for a fleeting moment… Here and there throughout the day. Then file away to linger over longer In days to come. In true reflection lies the power To move forward into an unknown future Full of hope that everything we encounter there Will be good So good in fact that it is better Than even the best of what we have know so far. And so, on this Birthday of yours The last year in an old decade The stairway to another decade just a year away I wish you peaceful, joyful, remembrances I wish you hopeful, purposeful wishes and plans for tomorrow May everything you have known until now Become firmly planted stepping stones To a higher purpose To greater joy To a life full of all the things you love © 2011 CathleenB |
