Distractions

Next period was Biology. Gwen met Luke at their lockers, followed closely by James. Luke was in Biology with Gwen, which was very lucky, as he was not very good at it. As they set off for class, Gwen noticed James following closely behind.

“Are you lost?” she demanded.

“Oh, do you need directions to your next class?” Luke asked politely.

“Well, you two are going to Biology next, correct?”

“Yeah…”

“That’s where I’m headed, too. Just figured I’d stick with you guys.”

Gwen barely managed to stifle a comment that would have been deemed highly inappropriate. She was not prone to violence, but this James character, mixed with her brother’s stupidity, was pushing her dangerously close to her breaking point.

She just managed to control herself by forcing some deep breaths. Think of yoga, she thought. In through the nose, out through the mouth.

“Are you alright?” James was looking at her curiously. She’d never noticed his eyes before…they appeared dark from far away, but close up, they were a really pretty bluish green…WAIT.

Pulling herself roughly out of her reverie, she wondered what was wrong with her. Without her knowing it, they’d already reached the Biology room.

“I’m fine!” she snapped. Tearing her eyes from his, she hurried into the room.

To Gwen’s relief and James’s obvious disappointment, the Biology teacher was a man. As Mr. Krepner took roll, he too came across the new student. His reception was not as warm as Ms. Jensing’s, however.

“We have a new student today, class,” he noted with obvious disinterest.

The girls in the class nodded appreciatively. A few even started to giggle excitedly.

“A Mr. James…Dean,” he read, one eyebrow raised in amusement. “Interesting name.”

James just smiled confidently.

“No need for formal introductions, we have a lot to learn today.”

At this, several of the girls pouted. Some even gathered the nerve to object.

“Now, now class. If you want to meet the young man, you’re all welcome to engage him in your petty little conversations…after my class.”

Gwen didn’t even try to conceal her triumphant smile.
