Daughter Winter

Daughter Winter

A Poem by Lady Scarlet

Like mother like daughter, or so they say,

If I am like her, why do I beg you to stay?

Why is it you have to beg me to be mean,

If I am the daughter of the winter queen?

She laughs at your pain, and bathes in your sorrow,

But, I am here to save you from tomorrow.

You want her, but she wants another,

Dad, how do you compare me to that horrible mother?

As you sulk in your corner, she basks in your pain,

And everyday I save you, with my healing rain.

I am your shelter, the bright sun to your flower,

So why is it dad that I make you cower?

You fear me, but you worship my mother

Sometimes I wish I was born to another.

A family who would love me and care,

But you are the father who wouldn’t dare.

This poem has much emotional power and draws the reader into the scene. To me, it's a little difficult to read. Some of the sentences have too many short words, which are like ripples on a washboard road. Rhyming poems are dependent on syllables, so watch for how many syllables are in each line. Nice job; keep writing.

Your imagery is vivid, emotions sharp. We can probably all relate to the strange sense of being like and yet totally unlike a parent. Your use of rhyme in this is understated and just right, and the ending sad but perfect - I love the symmetry between the beginning about "mother" and the ending about "father."
