Alive

Alive

A Poem by Ashley Blair

Wear blush on your cheeks
Look alive
Maybe baby, if you look pretty enough,
No one will notice that you're decaying inside.
You get faded on the toxic fumes of this world
Because reality is breaking away
And the only way you find clarity
Is walking these tired streets
Where everyone knows your name
I know you never stopped showing your soul
Even when your childhood was carried away
Into a terrible night and up the lightning bolts
That cracked as you held onto yourself as comfort
But even those lightning bolts
Were just the real world crashing down
Electric adolescence flows all around
And you're left in the middle standing lonely and afraid
Your dreams of adulthood have finally crumbled away
Because there you stand in your solitary existence of inbetweeness
They say your mind is too alive
But forget what they say, darling, you survived.

There are plenty of those looking pretty enough, but decaying on the inside walking around. Still . . . No matter your scam or your honesty, if you live long enough you can grin and say "I survived."
