New ties, old friends

New ties, old friends

A Poem by Lauren Xena Campbell
"

I left college on Friday.

"

Forever is ‘leaving’ the plague on my house,

And counsel of good will being abandoned,

For every account of well wishing they bring,

They force a new blood tear from me,

It breaks my heart to leave.

The road is long and goes ever on,

And trees will still grow for years to come,

Weather family, friend or foe,

The wind joins us closer,

And all shall be missed,

When relationships are shattered.

They speak to shortly renew,

But their eyes wave silence farewell,

As with parting glace and brave attempt,

Life had to commune,

And travel further in this living abyss,

With nought but memories to amuse.

It is too hard to say…

…Good-bye.

You feel things keenly. But at least you have a strong poem to remind you of how you felt. Most just drift from one life event to another, but poets and writers draw more sentiment from things. In this they suffer, but also see more than others perhaps. We maybe feel isolated by our sensitivities but we are not as others are just less able to put it into words perhaps. Good luck with next stage.

I like the last lines. Sad and touching. It's hard to say goodbye.

Now here the sentimentality is natural and not too much. It is a sweet departing and leaving a part of life behind you. "The road is long and goes ever on,

And trees will still grow for years to come,

Weather family, friend or foe,

The wind joins us closer," ------------I liked this for it was the classic timelessness in three lines. and this: "But their eyes wave silence farewell," -----what a way to express sadness.
you are getting there, you are getting there...all if full of light for you. :) cannot wait to read more.

Times of change are hard, no doubt about that. I think because we've left home for the first time, the new friends we make during college stay with us forever. Your poem does a great job of describing what leaving college, really making major changes in life, feels like. Those meloncholy goodbyes may be forever. Well said and deeply felt.

Awe... I remember the utter feelings of a pseudo home sickness/anxiety that accompanies such times of change. You have captured a real emotion for me here. It wasn't a pleasant emotion to revisit but a very powerful one. You have done well. Good luck as you move on in the world.
