Back In Town

Back In Town

A Chapter by Lacey Brookelle

Brooke dropped her bags at the bottom of the stairs. Makayla followed shortly behind her. The two took a deep breath. Brooke stood up to straighten her hunched over back. They both looked up and the stairs that seemed to go on forever.

Brookelle: We would move in to a place with a second floor..

Makayla: yes brookelle. Yes we would.

Brooke grabbed only one of her bags and continued up the stairs. After reaching the top step, she stopped. Two empty bedrooms, one across from the other. She walks in the door to the right. A giant window covered almost the entire wall. The sound of Mayday parade echoed through the walls of her empty room. Looking out her window, she see's a boy looking back at her. She pushed it open and climbed out onto a patch of shingles. The boy looked curious and did the same thing. Brooke sat hugging her knees in her arms. She looked up at him. His dark strangely dreamy green eyes cut right through her. He raised his eyebrows and flipped his long black hair to the side. Then he mimiced the way she was sitting. Brooke raised her head a bit.

Brookelle: Can i help you?

Her voice sounded quiet and a bit scratchy from all the crying she had done today.

Boy: Mind telling me your name?

He tilted his head a bit. She broke eye contact from him. She parted her lips and took a breath. Yet she still remained silent.

Boy: Alright.

He paused, hoping she would say something.

Boy: Well, sorry.. Just wanted to know the girl whos moving into a room that ive never even seen the light go on in.

He pressed his lips together as he stood climb back inside his window.

Brookelle: Its Brooke.

He let off a smile.

Boy: Nathan.

She didnt speak.

Nathan: Right, i can take a hint. Nice to meet you Brooke.

Brookelle: Yep you too Jason.

He looked up and sort of laughed.

Nathan: Its Nathan-

She snapped out of the somewhat trance she was in.

Brookelle: uhm, right. thats what i said.

Nathan: No, you-

Brookelle: Look, i would say nice to meet you, too. With a cheesy grin on my face. But Lets face it, you and i meeting could end up being a very bad thing, couldnt it?

Sarcasm rolled off her tounge. He let out a laugh and shook his head a bit. He grabbed onto the top of the window seal and swung himself back in.

Nathan: You uh, Have a nice night Brooke.

She let a smile escape from her lips. He closed the curtains and shortly after she saw the light go off. She didnt look too much into it, he was just her new neighbor for the next four months then she'd probably never talk to him again. She laughed to herself as she reached for her sketch book. She moved the pencil and quickly began to draw what was directly in front of her.

Morning light peaked in through the window, forcing mkaylas eyes to push open. She rolled over only getting herself more tangled in her blankets. Rolling one more time, she breaks free and nearly falls off the edge of her bed. She sat up and search the nightstand for her phone.

Makayla: S**t, its in brooke's room.

She says outloud to herself. Blurred vision, she stands up and stumbles across the hall.

Makayla: Brooke i- ahh.

She falls to the ground after stubbing her toe against brooke's unpacked suite case. Makayla groans to herself as she lays on the floor.

Makayla: ah, i just want my phone.

Brooke sits up scratching her head. Her eyes still closed and half in her own dream world. She takes a deep breath and forces her eyes open.

Brookelle: Did you sleep there?

Makayla sits up, slamming on the floor and very annoyed.

Makayla: where is my phone?!

Brookelle: No really, did you sleep on my floor?

Makayla picked up a pillow and tossed it in her sisters direction. She groaned and shook her head at brooke. She laughed, makayla was not a morning person.

Makayla: Brooke.. im hungover.

She whined as she blocked the sun from her eyes.

Brookelle: Great, now i have to make breakfast.

Makayla: You dont understand, my phone is missing.

Makayla was still somewhat slurring her words. Brooke laughed.

Brookelle: Check by the toilet in the bathroom?

Makayla shot her a dirty look.

Makayla: Haha halarious.

She stood up and stumbled into the hall. It was silent for a minute.

Makayla: NO.

She shouted, entering the room again. Brookelle dug through her suite case for an outfit. She pulled out a little yellow sundress and held it up to her body.

Makayla: Brooke, its been two weeks. Unpack your damn suite case.

Brooke laughed.

Brookelle: This place isnt my home.

Makayla: im afraid it is, for the next five months.

Brookelle: I thought it was four?!

Makayla: Six max.

Brooke groaned.

Makayla: Sorry.

She paused.

Makayla: Just for that, ill cook breakfast.

Brooke half smiled. Makayla turned and headed down the stairs.

Makayla: So he's coming over tonight?

Brookelle: huh?

Makayla: Kyle.

Brookelle nodded and pressed her lips together.

Brookelle: He said he wants to work of things.

Makayla rolled her eyes and tooke a sip of her coffee.

Brookelle: is it so wrong of me to want him back?

Makayla: Yes.

Brooke sighed at her sisters blunt answer.

Nathan's Point Of View:

I ripped off the covers as i twisted and turned, my touled hair matted with sweat. My eyes were streaming and my fists we clenched. My eyes flickered, relief flowed through my body. I was awake, it was over. I pushed my fingers through my knotted hair and wiped the sweat from my forehead. I slumped from my bed to the bathroom. I looked like a complete wreck. My brother Joe appeared in the mirror behing me.

Joe: man, youre sweating.

I let a sigh escape from my lips.

Nathan: i know.

I filled my hand with water and brought my face down into it, hiding the sweat.

Joe: What happened?

My body tensed up.

Nathan: Stop.

Joe: no. what happened that night nate.

Nathan: Joe.

My voice got louder and my fist became clenched.

Joe: Nathan, why wont you tell anyone. And if you say you dont remember that is bullshit because i know that you do.

I felt my heart start to beat faster. My whole body tensed up and i felt my forehead begin to sweat. I turned around and grabbed his shirt. I shoved him into the wall and back toward my face. Our noses were nearly touching.

Nathan: Nothing happened.

At this point i was screaming. Joes face was written with fear. My grip on his shrit loosened and he pushed me off of him. My back hit

Joe: What the hell bro.

It felt as thought reality had snapped back into me.

Nathan: i cant-

Joe: Save it, alright. You need help.
