Ode to music

·         What if...

(An ode to music)

What if there were no music in the world?

No sweet and slow songs for you to sing your girl

No melody to move you

No rhythm to soothe you

No blues to groove to

No beat to cruise to

What if beethoven chose another route?

Or elvis' albums were too controversial

And they never came out

Lennon never sung a lyric out of his mouth

And morrrison was so paranoid

He never left the house

If stevie and ray could see the rain

Would their music sound the same?

If bo diddley never played, how could you feel his pain?

How could you be touched by dylan,

If you didn't know his name?

How could you zone to clapton, if he never had a pick?

How would you know who was the greatest,

If your favorite rapper never spit?

Where would rock be if zeppelin decided to quit?

What would the stones be without mick?

What if smokey never told you about

'The tears of a clown'?

Would you still be able to get down

With no rick james or james brown?

Where would the world be

If hendrix never found his sound?

What if him and bradley didn't o.d.?

Bob marley didn't see the point

Of singing to a slow beat

What if tupac never picked up a pen

To write his poetry?

No genres or categories

For songwriters to tell their stories

Now, if kurt was still alive

Would nirvana have survived?

Where would hip hop be

If big and pac wouldn't have died?

Would there be a jay-z?

T.i.?, 50 cent?, or shady?

If andre never hit the chronic

Could you pick out a dre beat?

If their eyes weren't on the prize

How free would the slaves be?

If i never heard another instrument

How much would it change me?

How could you be a public enemy

If they didn't 'bring the noise'?

Or see 'the dark side of the moon'?

With no pink floyd

You couldn't 'put a candle in the window' with no c.c.r.

Music can be your messiah and give you c.p.r.

Bring you back to life

And out the dark when the light seems so far

If manson didn't cross lines

How would we know where they are?

What if scarface didn't rhyme

Because he died dealing in the streets

How long would we have been in vietnam with out

Woodstock's appeal for peace?

What if krs decided not to drop gem's?

And eric b. Never made a beat for rakim

What if les claypool picked another profession

Instead of the bass?

Or trent reznor went with plan b

And let his talent go to waste

Where would the lox be if puffy didn't sign mase?

What if quincy jones never got his big break?

Worked a 9 to 5 got stuck in the rat race

Santana's 'black magic woman' cursed him

So he couldn't hit the stage

Zack and tom conformed

Instead of making us 'rage'

How could we 'get by'?

If kweli never put the pen to the page

What would stoner's do?

With no phish, dead, or dave?

No chopin movement of beauty

Or 'skies of blue' for louis

What if elvis and jimi died doing their duty?

And we never heard a track from bootsy

What if 311 never asked 'who's got the herb?'

Pharrel didn't make beats

He was just a 'skateboard nerd'

Or eminem didn't blow up

And he's flipping burgers instead of the bird

Langston washed dishes and we never heard

What happens to 'a dream deffered'?

What if the man in black didn't 'walk the line'?

Or prince didn't dare to be different?

Because he didn't have the spine

What if neil young wasn't a singer,

Just a 'southern man'

Rakim never took the time to 'think of a master plan'

Otis was too busy to sit on the 'dock of the bay'

The temptations all met

But didn't have anything to say

And steve miller didn't have the 'time

To fly like an eagle he just let it slip away'

Could you picture music with no miles?

That's like words with no vowels

Or a sentence with no nouns

It wouldn't be complete

What if al green's ear never heard a beat?

Or marvin didn't ask us 'what's goin on?'

How different would you life be

If you never heard a song?
