A Chapter by Luke Rawlings

Better safe than sorry. Better dead than alive. Better a hero than a coward.

I hear these everywhere. Mumbled by the incoherent addict as he straps the belt to his arm. Whispered by the diseased w***e as she seduces her client. Muttered into your ear by the man that embraces you as he slips a knife between your ribs.

We are born into sin. Temptation bombards us like the fetid stench of carrion. It is always there, even when you wash your hands of the blood. The average nobody succumbs to the adverts that make them feel hollow and satisfied. That temptation that appeals to the senses. That makes them feel naughty and dirty while they stay safe. Their god will forgive them.

I am already damned. I am already lost. I am already forsaken.

The temptation taints my soul until it becomes my duty. It becomes expected of you. Who am I to fight the majority? They are the power. The law makers chosen by the ones they will imprison. The temptation and duty follow me, clinging to my soul. So I use them to..shorten the majority every now and then.

The people are sheep without a shepherd. One sheep is strong but quickly crushed. The flock are strong but easily led. They will run from the wolf in the field into the cave. Even if the rest of the pack awaits.

I heard once that you live life by the moments that take your breath away. What if you take somebody else's breath?

Every man carries that stench of temptation; that miasmic odor; that musk of deceit. We are all created to serve something. Our stomach becomes our god.

That is where I help.

I cut it out of them.

OK, that gave me chills. Satanic to a degree, hopelessness, and reminded me of a thirst that can't be quenched. Heard someone talk of crack that way once. He had managed to get free of it.
