A Distant War Cry

A Distant War Cry

A Poem by Lucy Sinclair
"

On a recent trip to the Western Front I was moved by how many men gave up their lives for this country, this poem was written with that sacrifice in mind.

"

As time slips quietly past us,
Dreams are nearly in sight,
The past is left behind us,
Yet voices call through the night.

Clawing through foreign soil,
Crying out, desperate to be heard,
Remember us, remember our sacrifice
Lest we forget, that was your word.

Guns are loaded, Cigarettes are lit,
Home becomes a foreign place,
Minds are focused upon that fatal hit
We fight to see our sweetheart’s face!

We sit focused upon a small screen,
For a fleeting second they are heard,
For an hour or two, they are seen,
Then cruelly silenced-shhh we murmur,

It is our time now, today is ours,
Yet in the distance, voices call,
Lest we forget, that was your promise,
Lest we forget, that was your word.

There are so many contrasts in this: the sense of urgency and the sense of waiting, the focus on the present moment that contrasts with the bigger reasons for why the soldiers fight...from what my brother has told me, that is a very accurate portrayal of the atmosphere. Very well done.

For a first draft, this is really good! I really liked it, and I think you should keep writing. Although, you'd do that anyway... Wouldn't you?
