the blue flicker

how it is around dawn here

When I take a walk

in the morning, I do it

to watch the sun rise,

mostly,

though on some days,

I notice how

my neighbors live,

in this little land of

apartment cottages,

which often seem

full of people

watching TVs

that flicker blue

even at this young hour,

the only light that's on.

I'm happy outside

with the dog owners,

dutiful people,

mostly,

who have to take this

walk at a dim hour,

and wait patiently,

wearing their

bedroom slippers;

and then the smokers,

also dutiful people,

caught in their

long lungfuls

of a blue-smoke habit

that almost seems pretty

when it's over there.

And I notice the

natural play of

new light on things,

mostly,

some with unexpected

blue shadow wings

that please me no end,

and I take a photo to send

you to say "good morning"

to you, and to anyone

open to the day,

like you,

hello to you, friend,

and good morning.

What a sweet poem
I love sunrises
I usually wake at five from years of alarms going off early or earlier than that in my working life
I like to just lie there and hear the birds come to life loudly before dawn
I live with bush at back and am very lucky it’s peaceful

Fewer walkers these days but it does seem to be increasing
Reminds me of an incident involving two morning dog walking seniors
One complained to the other that his dog was not leashed and got punched in the face for his comment
These guys were both over 70
Not just sink drains to watch out for

I love the way you talk about smoke and smokers in this poem - it's so easy to envision the imagery you're putting forward here, and I think it was that part that pulled me into the visual story you were telling. Thank you!

Thanks! I'm glad you were "pulled into" this work, as I hoped most people might be able to identify with something here. And ease of imagery is a goal. You put that perfectly. I'm tempted to put "ease of imagery" on the computer so I remember and consider it all the time. :-D
