Hotel Utopia

Hotel Utopia

A Poem by Lewis Davis-Norman
"

This one is a bit odd and satirical, but I really like it. Let me know what you think!

"

Welcome to Utopia, please take off your shoes

The sod of impure soil mustn't stain our floors

Your possessions? They’re having another final check.

Have a shower; your rotten skin will taint the air.

I hope you enjoy your stay; we have the finest room for you

Top floor, at the back, beautiful brick-wall view

Bed so comfortable the vermin relish in it

Writhing their unctuous bodies in the silky spreads

If you would forgive us, the shower is antiquated

It chokes on sewage and spits shards of limescale

But I suppose that you people are no strangers to filth

Do you bathe in grime in your decrepit dwellings?

Our culinary splendour is the epitome of its kind

But perhaps too rich for your unripe tongue

Are your people accustomed to the elegant etiquette

Of such a refined gastronomic affair?

Oh please don’t mind the guests, they mean no harm

They are unaccustomed to people of your background

They are unfamiliar with your pungent rustic smell and

Find your tones distasteful. They clash with the curtains you see.

Please sir, where are you going? Why must you leave?

It is rude to walk out on a man who is talking to you

My kind would not stoop to such wretched ignorance.

Utopia isn't for everyone, only those like me.

Wow. This is very interesting. For me, it was about how people say "this place is great" or "life is awesome" or "this group of people is so nice" and then it turns out not to be. Everything has its downside no matter how good it seems, and some people think that the other person must be strange for not wanting to be a part of that group, yet the people aren't accepting. It just goes to show what hypocrites we are.

You've perfectly described the stay at most of the hotels around the world. Besides that though, it's witty, and I really like it too.

My first thoughts along the way we're ewww gross, lol. I first read this in a very literal way and clearly saw the wretchedness of this hotel. Then with that in mind I re read it and attributed all those disgusting and vivid details to a sad state of affairs that only gets better in words, not in actions..

Interesting one with a whole new idea !

Satirical? Yes. Odd? Perhaps. But also profound in a way. We have a way of promoting a Utopia, or rather, an idea of a Utopia that all people do not share. This is a great piece, I believe, to describe quite a few of the previous centuries as regards to racism. Nice write! "For Utopia is not for everyone". Great line!

This piece is dripping with satire, but I think that is a good things. It shows that through its exclusivity, the Utopia takes on a dystopian atmosphere. It becomes a place that shuns diversity and seeks to make the gusts conform to a certain mold. However, that mold is a negative one. I think that really hit me in the second to last stanza when I realized the Concierge was racially insulting the gusts. This makes us think about what a Utopia is and what we would give up to make such a place.
