My Midnight WalkA Poem by EL LAOJust one of my fearsI awake in the middle of the night Cold sweat, panting and eyes wide open My senses heighten and brain on
Thoughts racing, speeding everywhere Can’t seem to get a hold of one Stop, I wish to know what you say
I get up and allow my eyes to adjust The coldness of the floor on my feet The grogginess has been swept away
I walk, the sound of creaking echoes My breathing is the only other noise I hear With a chill air flow around me
My glasses, where are they Even if my eyes adjusted to the light My vision will still have blurriness
With my glasses on, I walk straight Stop at the door, open it I continue my voyage, not looking back
I stop and turn to open the door I finally reached my destination I walk in, and breathe out everything I feel inside me
I stand in front of the mirror A face peers back at me I don’t flinch, but look back with disgust
How long has it been I haven’t seen you in ages Now look at you, old and decrypted
A horror washes over me I realize this image, is me An old man at death’s door
Waiting for it to open and welcome me in I know I should not step in but I lost my will I fought and tried so hard for so long
I give up, accomplishments are worthless I never achieved what I wanted And now I stand here defeated
I turn around and walk away This night turned out the same as the last A stare from a dead soldier, wishing me to join me And I can’t find the opening to join him
