![]() Chapter Four: Where to Now..?A Chapter by Leon Tsukumo![]() After escaping the lab, Raira has no clue where to go now...![]() Once Raira's tears faded into quiet sobs, she inhaled sharply and tenderly wiped the remnants from her cheeks. The coolness of her fingers traced the damp trails left behind, a stark reminder of the fear and despair she had just escaped from within the cold, sterile walls of that forsaken lab. Free at last, an exhilarating sense of liberation mingled with a heavy blanket of uncertainty.
Standing in the enveloping darkness, she felt lost and disoriented, as if the night conspired to obscure her path. Where was she to go now? The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and distant pine, and the chilling wind whispered secrets through the trees, blending with the occasional rustle of leaves that sent a jolt of fear coursing through her. She strained her eyes to penetrate the shadows, but they twisted and shifted before her, hiding the true nature of her surroundings.
Each step felt foreign. The soft crunch of gravel beneath her feet starkly contrasted with the sterile tiles she had known. Raira had no map or compass----just the instinct to move into the unknown. She wandered hesitantly, the darkness stretching like an uncharted sea around her. Her heart raced as she ventured further into the night, desperate for a glimmer of light or a sign that she wasn’t as alone as she felt.
Raira’s heart raced as she heard the echoing footsteps trailing behind her in the enveloping darkness. A primal instinct took over, urging her to run with all her might. Each rapid beat of her heart seemed to drown out everything else while an overpowering fear gripped her, causing her to cover her ears with trembling hands and slam her eyes shut, hoping to shield herself from the terrifying unknown. In her blind panic, she suddenly collided with a solid figure and fell backward, landing awkwardly on the hard, unforgiving ground. With a startled gasp, she pried one eye open, only to be met by an extraordinary sight. Before her knelt a man, poised and attentive, extending a hand toward her as if he were a guardian angel in the shadows. He appeared to be in his mid-twenties with striking dark maroon eyes that seemed to swirl like molten lava, fading into a soft, peachy hue at the edges. His pupils, white and star-like, sparkled with an ethereal gleam that captivated her gaze. His hair was a tousled mane of black, wild, and untamed, accentuating the imposing dark grey and black horns that rose elegantly from his head, lending him an aura of both mystery and strength. The man’s face bore the marks of hardship; two scars etched across his skin told stories of battles endured. One scar slashed from the left side of his chin, cutting a path diagonally across his cheek, while the other marred the bridge of his nose. Yet, despite these rugged features, his expression exuded an air of somber compassion, casting a warm glow amidst the darkness surrounding them, making Raira feel a flicker of safety in her turmoil. The man muttered something in a strange language, his words slipping from his lips like low growls or perhaps even snarls, echoing eerily in the air. Raira stood before him, her brow furrowed in confusion as she tried to decipher the guttural sounds. It was clear she couldn’t understand him, and the bewilderment on her face was palpable. Noticing her puzzled expression, the man cleared his throat, drawing Raira's attention. He took a moment to compose himself, his posture straightening as he prepared to communicate in English. His voice emerged as a calm, collected monotone laced with a low, gravelly timbre that added an air of seriousness to his words. Trying earnestly to connect with her, he said, “Are you okay, young one?” Yet, his attempt came out more like, “You be… okay? Young one?” The way he spoke, with his rustic accent and deliberate enunciation, made it sound as though he were still struggling to grasp the language fully. The man stood with an air of quiet discomfort, a faint blush creeping across his weathered cheeks as he stumbled over his words. In stark contrast, Raira radiated warmth, a bright smile lighting up her face as her laughter danced in the air like music. “Excuse me, sir, but I think the phrase is ‘Are you okay?’” she chimed, her voice cheerful and carefree, each giggle spilling out like the tinkling of bells. The man’s gaze met hers, and he felt a flicker of surprise ignite in his chest. Her playful laughter was a breath of fresh air, completely unlike the shrieks of terror that usually greeted him. As she continued to giggle, a small, genuine smile broke across his features, transforming his expression in a way that felt almost foreign to him. At that moment, the tension that had lingered for so long began to dissolve, replaced by a comforting warmth that enveloped him, bringing a sense of joy that he had long thought lost. Raira’s infectious giggles gradually faded into a gentle hush, her bright eyes sparkling with curiosity as she gazed up at the man towering above her. With an innocent tilt of her head to the left, she asked, “Say, mister, what’s your name?” A hint of mischief danced in her expression, inviting a connection.
The man, rugged and somewhat disheveled, looked down at her with an expression that oscillated between confusion and amusement. “Thazremoth…” he managed to say, his voice thick with a heavy accent, the strange sounds tumbling out of his mouth like stones struggling to find their place. He paused; the weight of the name was seemingly too great to bear, and with a sheepish gesture, he pointed at himself as if to cement the identity he had just shared.
Raira’s brows knit together in concentration, her little face scrunching adorably as she attempted to echo his complex name. “Tha…srea..moth…?” she stumbled, her attempt awkward yet earnest. When she realized the name had slipped through her fingers, her expression shifted into a comical pout, her lips forming a small, determined line that was almost too cute to be taken seriously.
Noticing her adorable frustration, the man felt a wave of warmth wash over him as he offered a tentative smile, hoping to lighten the moment. He shifted his thoughts to something simpler, rifling through his mind for a name that would roll off her tongue easily. After a brief moment of contemplation, he declared, “Augustine.”
Raira’s eyes widened at the new name, a spark of joy igniting within her. “Augustine?” she echoed, her melodic voice bubbling with delight as she repeated the name a few times. Each repetition was accompanied by an infectious grin that lit up her entire face, her laughter ringing like tiny bells as her earlier frustration melted away into pure, unadulterated happiness. Augustine glanced around for a moment before saying, “Me… need… go,” his words still heavy with effort. After speaking, he stood up, turned, and began to walk away. Occasionally, he looked back at Raira, but then it struck him that he didn’t even know her name. Yet, he was already too far away to turn around and ask. ~ • • • ~ As Augustine reached the worn wooden door of his modest apartment, he fumbled with the collection of keys that hung from a ring on his finger. The sound of metal scratching against metal filled the cool evening air until, with a satisfying click, he unlocked the door. Just as he was about to step inside, he noticed a peculiar silence behind him. Turning around, he was greeted by the sight of Raira, a small figure illuminated by the soft glow of the hallway light. He had to bend down slightly to meet her gaze, which sparkled with innocence and curiosity. “Hi, mister Augustine!” she called out, her voice bright and melodic. Augustine felt a rush of surprise wash over him as he realized she had trailed him all the way home without him being aware. “Hi…” he managed to reply, still processing the unexpected turn of events. “Followed me?” Raira nodded eagerly, “I don’t exactly have a home to go to… so I thought I’d follow you and live with Mister Augustine!” Her face lit up further, excitement radiating from her like sunshine breaking through clouds. “Oh! I noticed you didn’t ask for my name earlier, so I’ll tell you now. My name is Raira!” She exclaimed proudly as if announcing a grand achievement. Augustine’s surprise mingled with a sense of warmth in his chest at her unabashed enthusiasm. He couldn’t help but smile gently, feeling the corners of his mouth lift. “Meet you, nice… Raira,” he replied, striving to articulate the words in the correct order, his voice filled with a mixture of tenderness and confusion. Augustine took a moment to process Raira's startling announcement about living with him, a frown creasing his brow as curiosity mingled with concern. "Parents... where?" he asked, his voice gentle. Raira's gaze shifted to the side, her expression clouding as if a shadow had passed over her heart. She wrestled with memories that had never formed, then slowly turned back to Augustine, her eyes reflecting a mix of sadness and determination. "I don’t have parents, at least none that I know of. I was made in a lab..." Her words hung in the air like an unanswered question, the silence heavy with unspoken stories. Augustine felt a pang of sympathy, his heart aching for the lonely truth she shared. He offered her a fleeting look of understanding before releasing a soft sigh, the weight of her reality settling in. In an attempt to lift the somber mood, he hesitantly suggested, "Me, could be… father... to you..?" As the words slipped from his lips, he witnessed a remarkable transformation in Raira. Her eyes sparkled with a newfound light, bright and hopeful as if a flicker of possibility had ignited within her. In an instant, her somber demeanor melted away, replaced by an infectious enthusiasm. She nodded eagerly, her smile blooming like a flower kissed by the sun, radiating warmth and the promise of a deeper connection. As Augustine stepped into his apartment, Raira followed closely behind him, curiosity evident in her eyes. He began to give her a tour of the suite, doing his best to highlight its features. Augustine led Raira to the first door on the left, which led to one of the bedrooms, a cozy space adorned with soft, beige walls and a neatly made queen-sized bed draped in a navy blue comforter. A small bookshelf filled with novels sat in the corner, and a window offered a glimpse of the bustling city below. Next, he showed her the second bedroom, which was slightly smaller but equally inviting. This room boasted a desk perfect for studying or working, bathed in soft afternoon light that streamed through the curtain-draped window. As they moved on, Augustine led Raira to the two bathrooms. The first was a sleek, modern space with a glass shower and a large mirror reflecting the bright lighting. The second bathroom, though smaller, featured charming details like a colorful shower curtain and a collection of quirky toiletries lining the sink. Finally, they arrived in the heart of the apartment: the living room and kitchen area. It was an open-concept space, creating a sense of warmth and togetherness. The living room was furnished with a comfortable sofa, a coffee table stacked with magazines, and a flat-screen TV mounted on the wall. In the corner, a small dining table awaited guests, surrounded by mismatched chairs that added character. The kitchen was well-equipped, its countertops cluttered with a few cooking essentials and a vibrant fruit bowl that brightened up the room. "That, be it..” Augustine concluded. Although the apartment was modest, Raira felt at ease, even if it was smaller than her old room in that... lab. The thought of the lab sent a shiver down her spine; it was repulsive to her, even just thinking about it. Augustine scrutinized Raira with a furrowed brow, sensing the underlying tension that gripped her. Her normally bright eyes darted anxiously across the room, and her fingers fiddled restlessly with the fabric of her shirt, betraying her inner turmoil. Leaning in closer, he reached out gently, tapping a finger to her chest----an intimate gesture meant to offer comfort. With his head tilted slightly, he searched her face for clues, hoping to dispel the storm of worry that clouded her expression. “You… okay? Seem uneasy,” he said slowly, his voice soft yet tinged with genuine concern. Raira glanced up at him, at Augustine, her eyes sparkling with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. With a small, determined nod, she wrapped her tiny arms around his strong leg, seeking the reassurance only a father could provide. Augustine was momentarily startled by her sudden gesture, but the warmth of her embrace quickly dispelled any surprise. Kneeling to her height, he settled on one knee, the grass cool beneath him. He looked deeply into her eyes, his gaze steady and filled with love. With an enveloping warmth, he pulled her into a tender hug, surrounding her with the security of his embrace. When Raira began to pull away from the hug, Augustine let go and let Raira pull away. ~ • • • ~ As the clock’s hands aligned at midnight, the silvery moonlight filtered through the delicate lace curtains of the guest bedroom, casting a peaceful glow across the room. Augustine gently guided Raira toward the inviting, plush bed, its soft, cushioned mattress promising a night of comfort. With meticulous care, he tucked the intricate quilt around her, the fabric warm and rich against her skin. With a tender smile that spoke of affection and protection, Augustine began to hum a gentle lullaby in his melodic native tongue. The notes danced in the still air, weaving a tapestry of sound that was both soothing and enchanting. Though the words were foreign to Raira's ears, the warmth of the melody wrapped around her like a beloved blanket, easing her into a tranquil, dream-filled slumber. Content that Raira was peacefully asleep, Augustine quietly slipped out of the room, careful not to disturb the serene atmosphere. He walked to his bedroom, adorned with walls that told stories of his past through framed photographs and cherished mementos. After a long day filled with meaningful moments, he settled into his bed, the sheets cool and inviting. As he closed his eyes, the weariness of the day melted away, and soon, the soothing sounds of the night wrapped around him. Both Raira and Augustine remained in the comforting embrace of sleep, their dreams intertwining with the night’s gentle whispers, allowing them to drift soundly and peacefully until dawn. © 2025 Leon TsukumoAuthor's Note
