Prologue - The New Case

Lucy, as always, arrives late to Scotland Yard's Mystery Room. She expected to see her mentor calmly welcoming her, but he seems worried about something.

Lucy Baker scurried down the halls of Scotland Yard, heading straight for "London's New Scotland Yard Serious Crime Division Classified Investigation Agency Headquarters"... Also known as the "Mystery Room". Lucy was almost always late to work, but her mentor, Alfendi Layton, dubbed "Prof", has gotten so used to it, that the most he would say was a snarky remark...

Or, at least, one of the sides of her mentor has gotten used to it. There were rare occasions where the hot-headed, red-haired side of his, which Lucy liked to call "Potty Prof", would show up and lash at Lucy for her lateness. Luckily for the plucky assistant, those days hardly ever happen.

But unfortunately, today was one of those days.

Lucy swung open the door to the Mystery Room and opened her mouth to spatter out her excuse, but she was interrupted when she saw the red hair covering her mentor's golden eyes. Potty Prof was out.

"Just what do I have to do to get you to be here on time!?" he bellowed, slamming his hands on the desk, sending papers flying. "Don't you know that there are murderers out there, spending more time free because you are always late!?"

"Ee, sorry, Prof!" Lucy cried. "I were just so caught up in this lovely weather! You know, you should head out sometimes. Hiding in the Mystery Room all the time isn't good for you."

"How many times have I told you..." Potty Prof groaned. "I do not like going outside."

"One day, Prof!" Lucy pointed her finger at her mentor. "I will get you outside of this building again!"

"Not if I cut off that-" Prof suddenly hunched over, holding a hand to his head. He groaned quietly as his hair began turning to a burgundy shade.

"Placid Prof!" Lucy chirped. "Good t'see ya!"

"Yes, good to see you, too." Prof straightened his posture as he fixed his hair. "I'm sorry about earlier, Lucy."

"Oh, it's nowt!" Lucy was clearly much more energetic with this side of the Prof. "I'm actually getting really used to it."

"Well, that's good, because I'm afraid he'll be showing up more often now because of the Forbodium Case." Placid Prof said. "And especially for this case."

Lucy watched as her mentor picked up a small vanilla folder. "Is this case that... interesting, Prof?"

Prof nodded slowly. "Yes, and there's something quite worrying about this case, to say the least."

If you are in high school, become a writer. This shows a lot of talent and if natural, you have a special gift. has gotten probably should be had gotten, things like that. At the level you are already at, the improvements are rather delicate.

I want you to show me she is plucky. That is the thing you show me, then I say, 'Oh, she is plucky!'
How do you do that? With a brilliant idea and talented writing.
That is taking it to a high level.
Tell me nothing, show me everything.
This is superior work.
Opens with visual action instead of the usual summary prologues we get around here.
