History is a Funny Thing

History is a Funny Thing

A Poem by Kai Bishop
"

Today is the anniversary of my Grandmother's death. She was my favourite person in the entire world.

"

history is a funny thing

and our history is this:

you in your chair

me on your floor

us

in the quiet breaths

in the silence between our shells

warmth

history is a funny thing

you told me you loved me

and you did

and i told you i loved you

and i did

and if i knew what was going to happen

oh god

i would have told you so many more times

and history?

history is a funny thing

i can't remember how you smell

your shampoo

when i sat behind you on your chair

with my tiny knees pressed against your back

and history is a funny thing

because despite all the things you told me that i can't remember

your smell is the thing i forgot that i try to hold on to

the thing i hate myself for letting go

isn't history a funny thing?

when they burned you to ashes

put you in a blue velvet box

it wasn't you

it was

but it wasn't, and

history is a funny thing

because one minute you're home

and the next you're buried

and history is a funny thing

because it all happens at once and not at all

you were alone when it happened

when it started at least

and maybe you saw the flash of lights in the hospital corridor

above you, above it all

did you hope?

hope we would come? be with you?

you were scared, i think

and you were alone

until the end

and history is a funny thing

because it went black before we could get there

you died alone

im so sorry

and history is a funny thing because

i cant remember where i was

when i should have been with you

and when mom found out in that parking lot

she knew she should have been too

but none of us were

and history is a funny thing

because hindsight is 20/20

and it always makes you f*****g hate yourself

and i think you wouldn't want that

and i think

history is a funny thing

and this is ours:

you and me and love and death

absence and regret

and memory

i love you

and it wasn't enough

history is a funny thing
