The Sight Behind Teal Eyes

The Sight Behind Teal Eyes

A Story by Kurureenu

The cash register rang as a price flashed up onto the customer’s side in neon green numbers. The man on the other side blinked his green eyes towards the customer, holding out his own hand.

“Five thirty-two, please,” he murmured.

The customer looked at the date on the receipt.

Today’s date. She thought looking at the clock, at first being eight-seventeen, which is now seven-thirty-six. The cafe disappeared into a kitchen decorated in light colored wood with a dark yellow shade of drapes as she looked down at the frying pan containing her breakfast.

She shook her black haired head at her newest vision. “I’m making breakfast today. I’m not going to-” she moved her hand wrong and knocked the pan to the floor, jumping backwards, she made sure it didn’t hit her bare feet.

She sighed angrily, letting her fist come down onto her counter making everthing jump to her unsaid, but still noisy, anger. Mentally cursing, she picked everything up and cleaned up the gooey mess.

“Fine! I will go out to eat!” she angrily grabbed her purse, knocking it down in the process exposing everything within it.

There was a knock on the wall as she noisily gathered everything up. She went out into the hallway of her apartment complex and a head popped out her neighbor’s door.

“Robyn! Be quiet! Joe is sleeping still. You know that if he doesn’t get enough sleep he’ll be cranky,” the head scolded.

“Sorry, Mrs. Scree,” the girl, Robyn, apologized as she blinked her unique teal eyes ahead of her.

Even if he does get enough sleep, he’ll still be cranky. Robyn thought in dismay as she stepped outside.

She walked a few steps forward and stopped to look down at the like-new sidewalk to her left. She looked at her watch.

Five... Four... Her eyes shifted upwards. Three... Two... One!

A male figure, loose baggy pants and loose t-shirt, was rolling down the road on his skateboard quickly. He made his skateboard jump high to get on a bench not too far from Robyn.

Robyn sides stepped to the right as the front wheels of the skateboard caught the bench, making the man fly forward along Robyn’s left and landing onto the ground skillfully on his knees.

Robyn saw this incident already, before attempting to make breakfast. She was no too enthusiastic about it. Especially since he was supposed to run into her. She started to walk away anyway at the man stood up and ran over to her.

“Sorry about that,” the man apologized running a hand through his red hair. “That happens... regularly.”

“Whatever,” Robyn replied as she crossed the street onto a new block.

The man continued to follow.

“Oh, how rude of me,” he started making Robyn stop to look back at him, “I forgot to introduce myself.” He smiled and stuck out his hand, “I’m Ronald, but please, call me Ron.”

She looked at his hand and turned away.

“I’m Robyn,” she replied in an uninterested tone as she finally came to the correct cafe.

She walked to the counter and started to give her order, taking out the exact amount. Robyn handed it to him and took her breakfast to the nearest cafe table, with table clothes of sky blue and fancy steel black chairs, and sat down.

Ron sat right across from her as she started to eat. For some reason he couldn’t stop staring at her.

What is this guy staring at? Robyn thought to herself in annoyance.

He continued.

She looked at him with a glare that seemed to send out an image of a body crashing against the deadly, rocky shore of a stormy, angry ocean.

He finally looked away.

“Hey. You seem smart,” he complimented.

This made her freeze. Smart? Not in her life.

“Why is that?” Robyn asked hiding a quizzical look.

“You seemed to know how much money you needed before the cash register. Though I did fail math in school, so it could just be me.”

Robyn tried to hold her posture, straight and serious, but this made her laugh.

Ron looked at her in confusion.

“I-I’m sorry,” Robyn managed to say through her laughter. “It’s just do funny. I’m sorry.” She blinked and regained her composure quickly.

Ron smiled and started to laugh himself.

“Its okay, Robyn. Same goes for me,” he replied, smiling.

She smiled also and finished up. she jumped as a hand clapped onto her shoulder.

“You are a good friend, Robyn,” Ron smiled.

Robyn smiled and made her way out the door. Ron continued to follow. She stopped and Ron ended up running into her. she didn’t notice as her surroundings around her changed into a skate part.

There was a small group nearby that she was standing just outside of, Ron was one of the people within the group speaking to them. They all had skateboards and Ron smiled and motioned Robyn over towards him

Then she was back with Ron apologizing for running into her.

“Oh, it’s okay,” Robyn replied looking around for nothing in particular.

He looked at her and picked up his skateboard that Robyn finally noticed that her was carrying until he bumped into her.

“Hey, Robyn,” he started.

“Yes?” Robyn replied to signal she was listening.

“You want to meet my friends?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

She didn’t know how she ended up doing so after saying ‘no’ but a few moments later she was at the skate park and standing just outside the group with two more men and two women all about Ron’s age all holding their skateboards or just standin on it with one foot.

Ron motioned for her to come over after a bit of speaking to his friends.

“Okay guys. This is Robyn,” Ron smiled pulling her next to him.

“Robyn, ay,” one of the men replied.

“Does she sing like a bird?” the other asked from beside him.

Both the girls nodded at each other from in between the two and hit them both upside the head at the same time.

“Ow,” they both said in unison as the girls began to laugh.

“What did I tell you two. I just met her. And came pretty close to running into her,” Ron smiled.

“Really. Must’ve been one of you failed moves,” the second man laughed.

“At least I can actually do an Ollie,” Ron smiled.

A look of dismay came up on the man’s face as everyone in the group, excluding Robyn, laughed.

“So, Robyn, how long were you living in this big city?” one of the girls asked.

“Uhhh, for practically my whole life,” Robyn replied.

“More than you, Brit,” one of the guys replied nudging one of the girls.

“Quiet,” the girl replied almost smacking him but finding the fact that he flinched funny. “Two for flinching.” She punched him twice in the arm.

“You two,” Ron smiled. “Let’s get to boarding!” he exclaimed as everyone shouted out in agreement and started to the half-pipe.

Robyn stood behind in the same spot as before as everyone started to dissipate from their old spots towards the half-pipe. Ron stopped and looked at her.

“You can just watch, Robyn,” he smiled.

“Thanks,” Robyn replied.

“Then you can see him fall!” one of the men shouted.

“Hey!” Ron shouted as he ran over to them.

They all started to show off all their techniques on the half-pipe. During one point of time the same man that was said who couldn’t do an Ollie attempted. As he was up into the air Robyn blinked as he succeeded in his move and rolled back down with a proud smile. She blinked again back to the present and watched as he fell and slid down the half pipe.

“I am never gonna get this more!” he shouted angrily getting up.

“Aw, c’mon, man. Don’t say that. You will,” one of the girls replied.

“When?! When I’m too old to even move?” he sighed angrily.

Robyn looked at the group and spoke up. “Hey, you’ll get it. I know you will,” she smiled.

Ron looked at Robyn then to his friend. “Listen to her. It’s almost like she could see the future.”

“See... the future?” Robyn repeated knowing he was just trying to help his friend.

“Okay,” he gave in, “I’ll keep on trying.”

Robyn turned to leave. “Well, I should get going now. See ya!” she shouted behind her as she started to walk off quickly.

“Bye guys. Skate tomorrow, ‘kay?” Ron said to his friends as they nodded in reply and he ran by her. “So, where do you have to go?” he asked.

“I-I don’t know,” she replied keeping her eyes forward and walking at a semi-fast pace.

He continued to follow from behind. She stopped and Ron ran into her. She didn’t notice as her surroundings changed around her.

She know she was obviously standing on the sidewalk but she was in a different part of town. She was watching someone cross the street. Then a dark blue car came by speeding. There was the squeal of brakes, shouts, and a burning rubber smell.

Robyn gasped coming back to her place on the sidewalk with Ron backing up with an apologetic mumble. He looked at her with a cross between confusion and curiosity.

She gathered herself and looked towards the road.

Not yet. But... She looked away with a sigh as the scene came back into her head.

“What happened? You stopped so suddenly,” Ron asked.

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

Robyn started forward again. Ron started to follow again and they walked for a while wordlessly. When they were close to the destination that Robyn was headed off to Ron thought that he should at least say something.

“Robyn,” he started.

“Yeah,” she replied to signify that she was listening.

“Never mi-,” he stopped when he passed Robyn up.

He saw her watching someone crossing a bare road nearby. She stepped closer to the curb, eyes fixed on the person on the person. Both looked up the road to see a dark blue car.

“No,” Robyn whispered.

“What?” Ron asked looking back towards Robyn.

The car was driving quickly, as before. the person was still only part way through crossing, not noticing the car at all.

She shot forward the car drawing near quickly.

“Robyn!” Ron shouted.

I’m not going to let this happen!

She heard the screech of brakes and smelled the burning rubber stench again. Time seemed to slow now. There was another shout from Ron. The person in front of her froze as she finally noticed the car, then screamed. The image of her vision flashed in her head again as she tackled the person to the side just as the car finally stopped a few feet from their old spot. They both rolled to the side. Robyn could practically feel the air of the passing car still flowing past her body.

When she finally caught up with herself Ron ran up to her and helped her up.

“Are you okay, Robyn?” he asked.

“Dunno,” she walked a few steps forward. “I’m okay.”

He smiled slightly, but not at what Robyn did.

Robyn stopped freezing in her place as her surroundings changed again.

Everything was decorated in some sort of white with a light pink rose every now and then. Pews, filled with people, crowded the room. Music started and everyone looked back in anticipation.

Robyn looked down and saw the flowing white wedding dress she was wearing. Someone pushed from behind and Robyn had no choice but to start forward. Her vision started to fade away just as she was starting to get a view of the groom nervously running a hand through his red hair.

“Robyn?” Ron called from in front of her waving a hand in her face.

“What?” she replied pushing the hand away.

“You seemed to have zoned. You’re cool now.” He glanced at his watch, “Well, I’m off.” He started to walk away but turned and asked, “Robyn, do you want to go out sometime? On a date?”

Robyn thought remember the last of what happened.
