Mirror at Midnight

Mirror at Midnight

A Poem by Kuo Yisheng

Staring in the mirror at midnight

Oh the wondrous sights you’ll see

When your hair’s in a knot with the troubles you wrought

Pleasured your eyes will be

There are festive frights and ghoulish delights

Waiting in the mirror at midnight

But when you look in the mirror at midnight

Those won’t be the only things you’ll see

Open your eyes, turn on the light

There’s a surprise! Your nails you will bite

When you think about the mirror at midnight

Festering fields of bubbling pus

Marks and defects, you feel the rush

Poke and prod to your delight

When you stare in the mirror at midnight

When you stare in the mirror at midnight

Oh the wondrous sight you’ll see

They laughed and they scoffed, you can’t brush it off

And now your face is completely cut-
