One and Done

One and Done

A Poem by Kris Merrells

Nothing is ever as good as the first time

I wonder why that is

I mean, it makes a certain sense

The newness of it all

The sensations that combine in a completely distinct way

But why is that good?

What is it about newness that adds to goodness?

Perhaps our bodies aren’t super excited about new things

Which means, of course, that they are

New things that we experience

Are new things that could kill us

That moment of anticipation

Before it happens

That brief, fleeting, sense of hope and fear

It makes are heart beat faster

Our hands sweat easier

Our breath come quicker

And then it happens

And it is good

And we are still alive

And then it’s over

It has been nearly three years since I have abandoned the status quo in search of a life that meant something. I always try to imagine what I would think of my life, if I were 100 years old, looking .. more..
