I Was WrongA Poem by Kane HagwoodThere are some people in this world that would try to sell your soul for a potato chip if they could.I Was Wrong Like a moth to the flame Watching my wings burn From lies told from sweet lips Unable to discern A mountain of letters No longer your concern I have to wonder in late hour of night What happened to all of the light Your voice of passion and grace Hidden from me now with guilt and disgrace We spoke of words We talked about love We even regarded who we believe Watches over us from above When my life was in peril It was truth you let sing One version of you was free The other wore a ring No It was not love you sought You wanted attention that you lack A rent-a-hero you bought I shared more with you than I would with any other And when I stepped up to save you from your own fate It was I who was lit ablaze in a pain you couldn’t even fathom Yet I am somehow the villain I was wrong About what was true No matter how much I wish to deny The siren that is you May God have mercy on your souls For the atrocities you bestowed upon me Don’t bother to ask if I care If you both sink deep into the sea Of all the lies and secrets you kept behind lock and key Of all the twisted games you played with me Never will you admit what you did was wrong Instead you’ll continue to sing the same song Until another victim dog-paddles along As for me I have washed ashore No more of myself for you Nothing left to abhor I live to fight another day What more is there to say Thank the Gods I know better Than to ever believe another letter That you may consider to write Don’t bother Because I found the light © 2024 Kane HagwoodReviews
