Sentenced to Life

Sentenced to Life

A Poem by Katarzyna Anna Koziorowska

Your meetings with my solitude
are exquisite.
Words that woke up too hastily
will remain unforgettable.

Please draw on the wall of my hell
the gate to paradise,
long locked with a padlock.
I swear to myself, I promise others,
that a dawn will awaken in me
that will bring tears instead of fresh light.

I don't want you to associate
my heart with an empty ballad
whose words no one here knows.
I don't want the silence to reveal itself
to our senses, that my body refuses
to obey me.

My unfeeling lips met your fear.
Is what I feel a dream come true?
Does what I see resemble the tender
beginning of this universe?

Try to wake up in my terrified dream,
put on a cloak that won't protect you
from the light of shooting stars.

Come back in my dream,
smiling and sentenced to life.
