Cover Your Heart with Melancholy

Cover Your Heart with Melancholy

A Poem by Katarzyna Anna Koziorowska

The body that you carry
with inexplicable veneration
hurts me.
I am disturbed by the silence
that irritates defiant scars.

I do not want to die in spite of
my faith, except that late morning.
I do not want to die in your arms,
I would rather wait for the first
summer snow to fall.

The frost bites my naked words,
hatred drains the marrow
of my black bones.
I look unsightly with sadness
under my eyes, a dress made of stars
does not shelter your hands.

Before anger burns the rock,
before hatred overwhelms my dreams,
the last wind of hope
will scatter.

We have to watch out for tears.
We have to guard the memory,
which is very unfair.
Cover your heart with melancholy.
