Where I'm From

Where I'm From

A Poem by Kourtnie

I’m from an old sycamore tree.

From bird’s nests on the back porch

And stuffed animals that filled my room.

I’m from nail polish and perfume

From many a rose bush,

Whose small buds bloomed into a beautiful rose, then died,

As if to show us the stages of life.

I’ m from bath salt and tattoos

From Sarah and Kevin.

I’m from Camaros and big gardens,

From many different aquariums

To having every house pet,

That always made noise from dawn till dusk.

I’m from clanging clocks and shining jewelry

            From Alan and Edie.

I’m from old cartoons and squawking birds.

From paperweights and fountain pens.

I’m from long journeys,

on which we would sing nursery rhymes.

In my closet was this box,

Filled with pictures, medals, and trinkets that had been given to me.

All of which brought back familiar faces and good memories,

Putting a smile on my face and tears in my eyes.

These are the things and moments that made me,

Just another leaf on this big family tree.
