Prologue: A most curious occurence.

I had a nice description all written out for this. And now it's gone.

 

It is, or it should be, a well-known fact that there are many worlds beside our own.  These worlds coexist simultaneously, and, oddly enough, any event that happens in any given world can affect not only that particular world, but also any that are close by.

     The movement of worlds is something which is still a mystery to me.  I can only say for certain that they are by no means stationary in their existence.

     These worlds are born, and die, approximately one birth and one death every three seconds, and exist for hundreds of billions of years at a time.  It is, however, the death of a world which first attracted my attention, for a most curious occurrence can be known to happen as a world dies, if the circumstances are correct.

     That is to say, if the correct celestial bodies and the correct worlds are in the correct places at the exact time of the death of one of those worlds, a gateway opens.

     These gateways take many forms, but the forms are unimportant.  What is important is this; sometimes the gateways are obvious, and sometimes they are not.  People have been known to cross a gateway between worlds, and barely even realise it.  Needless to say, this would cause the person a great deal of confusion.  It would also be a great adventure for that person.  And this, my friends, is how our story begins.

Author's Note

I had been planning on editing this into oblivion before posting it, and making it wordy and nice, but my computer is deceitful. It has a floppy drive, and no floppy driver, so I couldn't save anything like I thought I could.
And I don't have a USB stick, I'm not techie enough for that yet. Give me ten years or so, and I may warm to the idea, but for now, I like my floppy discs.
There's something very nice about floppies. They remind me of my childhood.
