Chapter 1 Starting out “We're out of food again!” A woman's voice called. “Not again!” I shouted. “This is the third time in a week, this has happened.” I thought. My sister came out, her brown hair was flying all over the place in the wind. Her green eyes looked very frustrated. She was very tall and strong built. She was wearing a red stripped shirt and blue jeans. She had brown boots with untied shoe laces. “Ever since dad left and mom died I have been in charge.” My sister shouted. “Well she didn't leave you to shout!” I yelled. I was almost as tall as my sister, and I had gray eyes. I was wearing the usual short sleeved shirt which was brown. I also had brown jeans. And wonderful black boots. My bow was the usual brown and was made from a tree branch with a special kind of string. My arrow was made of a sharpened stick with two long points on either side of the sharp end to hold the creature down. “Well you might as well go to the forest and look, but don't take long!” My sister said. “I will sis'” I replied. I grabbed my bow and arrow and walked towards the forest. “Its a good day to hunt.” I muttered staring at the open blue sky. The sun shone in all it's glory through the various trees, occasionally it's ray's would poke out of gaps in the forest. I hoped it wouldn't take me too long to find some food for I really did not like being out too long in the heat, and besides my sister would hate me if I took too long. [1st day] I was walking through the forest. Leaves crunched under my shoes. Most of all the leaves were green, yellow or red. I also saw mushrooms on the ground. They were soft and squishy to the touch. I observed some birds fly by. “Wow.” I thought. That night I made a campfire. The orange flames danced around on the logs. I was not afraid of the dark. I saw a ant crawl by. It picked up a crumb of some kind and slowly carried it away. I watched a lady-bug flutter by. There were crickets chirping. They sounded like my old rusty saw. Only squeakier. [2nd day] I wasn't too worried. I wasn't surprised that I didn't find anything yet. I doused the fire and packed up. I found a doe and a couple squirrels. But I knew that my sister wouldn't fall for that. She needed enough to last the winter. And she also complained. It was so annoying. And there were the wild dragons. Yes I was afraid of them. They rarely attacked our area. But I have heard of them. Taking cows, sheep, pigs and other animals for their dinners. But stories of princesses in distress and knights coming to save the day, was just plain ridiculous. The only stories I believe were one's about friendly dragons. A cruel dragon was unbelievable. I liked dragons though. They are worth hearing about. They seem to have a great history behind them. I couldn't wait to see a real dragon. I only have gotten glimpses of them. I never actually met one in person. But I never knew that the wish I made was going to come true. [3rd day] I looked around the forest. “Still nothing!,” I thought frustrated. “Three days, three days! I have looked and still nothing.” Suddenly something moved in the bushes, thinking it was a rabbit I took an arrow and aimed at the bush keeping an eye on the movement. “Now,” I thought. “Don't hurt it just merely wound it.” I was a compassionate fellow. I couldn't hurt whatever it was, because I had no idea what it could be. I fired expecting some noise, instead of any animal noise there was a squeak. A small, strange, high pitched squeak. Surprised at the noise I decided to see what it was. I moved the bushes to see a little dragon hatch-ling probably no bigger then a small puppy, with my arrow in its wing. I couldn't believe my eyes a real dragon right in front of me! It looked up at me and tried to get away. But the arrow wouldn't let it. The little creature grunted and growled but wasn't strong enough to break it's captor and it was always looking at me and it's wing. And I of course was excited to see such a small creature. “Hey,” I said. “Don't be frightened I'll help you.” So very carefully pulling the arrow out of its wing which was as soft as a leaf and as fragile as paper, I freed the creature from the arrow, I picked it up and ignoring its objecting squeaks I took it to a cave that no one knew about, only I did. My sister didn't it's a secret. “And now,” I told the dragon. “This is your home.” The dragon had stopped struggling in my arms and looked at the cave curiously. I had found this cave while searching the forest for a hiding place from the rain, and since the cave was such a wonderful and dry place it became my hideout. It was so blended with the rock you wouldn't be able to see it unless you came right up to it. The cave was inside a hill, it's hole was huge and it had two rooms. I put the dragon down and sat down. “Now,” I thought. “Do you have a name?” The dragon looked at me curiously. “Do you have an owner?” I asked. It still stared. “Well you couldn't have come all the way out here by yourself.” I reasoned. But the more I stared the more I was convinced it was alone. “Guess not.” I thought. All of the sudden a female voice shot into my head. “You twerp!” It boomed. “I have a name and your going to guess it or I'll bite you on the nose!” The dragons sky-blue eyes narrowed. I began thinking fast. I thought of the Latin classes I used to take a lot. I chose a chose one of the Latin words which was beautiful, and then said through my head. “Vesper!” The dragons eyes blinked in surprise then she seemed to smile. “Very good” She said. Then looked at her wounded wing which was the left one. “Oh,” she said. “My fault.” I said. “You scared me half to death, now how am I supposed to get anywhere?” Vesper asked. She hung her head sadly. I smiled. “I messed you up, I'll fix you.” I said. I took out some purple thread and a needle. “Will it hurt?” Vesper asked, sniffing the thread all the way up to the needle. “It might” I said. I held Vesper down and started sewing her wing piece back together. Vesper struggled but to no avail. Finally I was done. Vesper managed to take a few steppes back to inspect her wing. “Do you have a Name?” she asked. “Boy” I said grinning. Vesper nodded. “Very good to meet you Boy,” She said. “But I must repay you in some way, I know!” “Wait a moment,” I said. “I just wounded you and then helped you with your wing, why do you want to repay me?” I asked. Vesper smiled. “Because I like you,” She said. “I am a wishing dragon so I will grant you almost every wish you give, so start wishing, but be careful,” Vesper warned. “You could get too greedy for your own gain.” “How old are you?” Vesper asked. “Fifteen.” I replied. “If I was your age I'd be blasting fireballs, and all the other dragons would be jealous.” Vesper giggled. “So you can't do fire yet?” I asked. “No but I can still pack a bite.” Vesper said showing her teeth. “Yike.” I said. They were razor sharp. “Now go and think about all the things you could do, but be careful as I have said.” Vesper said. “I don't want to leave,” Said I. “Well your going to have to, I want my rest.” Said Vesper yawning. I tried to change her mind by scratching her back and neck. “That feel's good” Purred Vesper. Then she realized that it was getting dark. “Go on you, trying to flatter me.” Vesper growled. “Do you know where I could catch some things?” I asked. “Try the watering hole,” Said Vesper. She curled up and gave no mind to me being there. I left, thinking of all the possibilities. But then Vesper's warning came back to me. “What if I got to greedy for my own gain?” I thought. I didn't really know what to think only that it was a scary thought. I had returned to the cabin I lived in which was on the other side of the forest. I never expected my sister to be there. She usually wasn't there when I got back. “Three days!,” She yelled. “Three days have I waited, begged, and scavenged with the little money we had to feed myself and the nights of worry, scary.” She looked disappointed. “She has no idea.” I thought. I smiled and lifted a doe and a couple hares off my back and one squirrel. My sister's eyes widened in surprise. “So much for waiting” She gasped. Then picked the load up and took it to the house. Then for the next week money wasn't plentiful and my sister wanted a better job. So she called me. “Boy I want you to go to this dragon you have been telling me about,” She said. “And ask it for a job, a big job.” So I left carrying the wish my sister wanted. I walked up to the cave wondering where Vesper was. I didn't see her creep up behind me. “Boo!” She giggled. I jumped higher then humanly possible and spun around thinking it was my sister who might of followed me, just to make sure I did what she asked. But it was Vesper. I looked Vesper over for a long time, she was worth looking over because of how beautiful she was! Vesper was entirely purple except her eyes which were sky-blue which were looking right at him. She was also bigger. Probably as big as a small colt. “Hello?” She said waving a talon in front of my face. “You there?” She asked. I smiled. “My sister wants a job with high wages and she wants a cottage not a cabin a cottage,” I said. “That's what my sister's wish.” Vesper shook herself as if cold water had had landed on her. Then she swished her tail back and forth. “Now,” She said. “Go back Boy for now there is a cottage and your sister has a job with high wages.” I picked Vesper up to her surprise and spun her around. For being big she sure was light. I put her down and gave her a hug. Then I ran. This happened a lot, my sister wished for a couple of things that made me stay with Vesper which I enjoyed a lot. Sometimes it was easy so I left easily, sometimes I didn't come back to my cottage for a day or two but one day the true test began. © 2016 Kornez
