Pole of Hope

Pole of Hope

A Poem by Funke Kolapo
"

If you have it, use it while you can.

"
Standing by the pole of hope,
hoe in hand to till the ground,
rope on his neck the tent to hold,
plans in his head to claim his hope;
make the ridge to yield the field,
plant yam, cocoa and corn,
nuts and beans to fill the barn.

While he plans, they till their lands.
Back on pole, he sings and sighs.
Praying for means to feed the kids,
and some dough to act his thoughts
He sings and sighs for signs and wonders.
He longs and prays for help from above,
hoping tomorrow a change will show.

I watch in horror as he keeps the watch.
If only a step, to claim his hope.
Roll the rope and hoe to work,
plough the land to reach his goal,
hope and pray for the seed to grow.
He sings and sighs for signs and wonders
He longs and prays for help from above
Hoping tomorrow a change will show.

I watch on as he withers and greys.
The man on the pole keeps the hope.
He hopes on till it's late to grow.
He sings and sighs for signs and wonders.
He longs and prays for help from above.
Hoping tomorrow a change will show,
till it's too late the seeds to grow.

A wonderful humanely compassionate poem, the picture you paint through these fine poetic words of the humble man tilling the soil in the hope it will replenish him with enough produce to feed his family, is truly touching and heartfelt! ( and some folk think they have it tough ? ) Splendid writing indeed !
