After School

After School

A Story by Amber

It had only been one thought. A single thought mixed in with many others. The only thing different was that this one was spoken.
"I wonder what school is like at night..." The thought escaped my lips while I was bored during one of my classes. My best friend, Tim, was sitting next to me and heard. His evil 'I have an idea' smile sneaked on his face.
"Hey, you know what would be fun?" he asked, smile still on his face.
"What?" I reluctantly asked.
"School. At night. I dare you."
"What?! Now way!"
"Alright. Then I guess I'll just have to make the school's newspaper have a whole article on how big a chicken you are," he smirked. I flinched. That wasn't a bluff, it was a threat. His girlfriend was on the newspaper and could easily get that done for him. I darted my eyes away.
"Fine. I'll do it. And so will you. I dare you!" He didn't look shocked. In fact, he looked like he was anxiously waiting for it. He agreed and we shook hands to make it official. The teacher came over and slammed a textbook on each of our desks. We said sorry and she walked away. A note was flicked onto my desk. It was from Tim.
"Meet me in the library after school today," is what it said.
~
School ended and, after getting some things from my locker, I made my way to the library. I searched through the rows of bookshelves until I found Tim- sprawled on the floor reading a comic. I laughed quietly at the sight of both him and a few girls watching him from behind the bookshelf. Despite having a girlfriend, Tim has gotten alot of admirers. His good looks and wild personality just drew them to him. Now myself, well, I'm just as good looking as him, but my personality is less wild. I still have just as many fangirls, though.
"Hey, dude, admirers at one o'clock," I whispered when I got close to him. He leaned his head backwards to see them, but he only caught a glance before they ran away.
"No good. They were just quiet bookworms," he sighed, slowly getting up. I shook my head, such a bad boyfriend. He lowered his voice to a whisper and inched closer to me,"Now about this dare. We have a soccer game tomorrow. The day after that there's a basketball game. That will be the perfect cover-up. We'll go to the game and sneak out sometime before it ends. Then we'll hide somewhere until night falls. I suggest the bathroom."
I was shocked by how much he had planned, but then again I really wasn't. I agreed to his plan and he smiled brightly. You could tell he was really looking forward to it.
~
The next day came. The soccer game was great. Of course, our team won. I even got a congradulatory kiss from a fangirl, and Tim one from his girlfriend.
Then after that the night of the basketball game came. Also known as the night of our bet. We met in the gym of our school and sat in the back so we wouldn't be noticed. We stocked up on candy and soda, hiding them in our pockets. And when we knew noone was watching us we successfully snuck out of the gym.
"Alright! We made it! Now lets find a place to hide," Tim said after we were halfway down the hallway. We made it to one of the bathrooms and hid in there.
An hour passed and still noone had come in the bathroom. The noise from the basketball game had died down until there was no sound left. I opened the door leaving just enough room for my head to fit. I looked left, and right. Nothing. No lights, sounds, or anything.
"It's safe," I whispered back to Tim. He came out, but I guess you could say it's more like he stormed out.
"Alright!" he shouted like a little child. He started running from door to door trying to find an open one. Finally, he found one. The door was open a crack. No light was coming out so I guess it was alright. It was still supicious, though. Tim didn't give it a second thought. He ran into the room before I could stop him. And before I could go in after him I heard the most horrifying scream. It was Tim's. I was about to run in from pure instinct, but I stopped myself. Instead I just peaked through the crack in the door to see what was inside.
It was the kitchen. I could tell that easily. Three girls were on the ground, with knives through them. No, they weren't human girls. They were dolls. How strange...
I looked around the room again. Tim was in a corner of the room. He looked terrified. I noticed a body standing over him. It was holding a large knife. I screamed, but at the same time Tim screamed to cover me up. He looked over at me. He nodded, and I waved goodbye to him as the knife came crashing down on him. I closed my eyes, looking away and wiping off a tear.
Against my better judgement I looked back into the room. I fell backwards as my best friend's killer was crouched down in front of me. I was one of the school's janitors. Actually, the one Tim and I liked the most. How could we have known he was actually this insane? I grinded my teeth in anger.
The janitor, no, the killer dropped the knife, splashing some blood on my clothes. He moved his finger up to his mouth, and smiled, "Shh..." I almost punched him, but I knew if I did that he would kill me. So I just controlled myself.
Slowly, making sure he didn't move with me, I got up. When I was I ran as fast as I could towards an exit. I made it out, and I was safe. Tim, though, sadly he was not.
