The Diary of A Wealthy Man

The Diary of A Wealthy Man

A Chapter by Mike Cole

Dear Diary,

Today I write because today will be my last day on the planet

I plan to take my life

You see after reconciling with my father

And graduating medical school I took my job as a physician

I made millions

Magazine covers

Photo Shoots

The women

It was all handed to me on a silver platter

But I still felt unfulfilled

I can no longer look my colleagues in the eyes

I feel like they are above me

They walk home to their wives

Happy

With smiles on their faces

Not a care in the world

I walk a different way

Empty

A longing for what they have

My father told me the money

He told me the pills would relax me

But they never work

This life is a waste

Maybe Hell can burn away my sorrow

He took the weapon

Put it to his head

Only those near his house heard the noise

But too many felt the effects

The sting of Arthur Wickit’s death

Years late they found his diary

 The cover entitled

“Wealth was never enough”

This is an amazing lesson. Often we see people whom we think are "successful" and we envy them...but would we be so envious if we truly knew what it was like for them?
I like the way you centered the text...you wrote this as a series of poems, rather than prose. And yet you chose to make it a book. Interesting format. And the way you reduced the text in your final chapter...that made an impact.
Excellent work, my friend!!

I truly enjoyed the message Mike, the character's are interesting in their father/son relationship that is completely plausible and should connect with readers. The format is a bit strange for story telling, you could add some descriptors of the action during the dialogue to make it more meaty and imaginative. The opening threw me a bit, because it talks about "Arthur's" life in stages, but then jumps back to his youth then jumps ahead again to him after a successful life that has brought him no fulfillment. I like the ending and can picture it vividly as a final scene in a short film. Good job.
