My Obsession

My Obsession

A Poem by Mike Cole

All that I want

My personal ambitions

My most sought after goals

NOTHING!

What do you have planned for me?

Where do you plan for me to go?

I want to know which way is the straight and narrow

And which way is Hell’s turbulent flow

Because that is the path I want to avoid

Teach me discernment of ways

So that my passion for you will be set ablaze

So that everyone will see my craze

And recognize my obsession

The one to which I devote all my attention

The one who holds all my fascination

The one who resides in Heaven

It's an interesting conundrum that flesh and blood cannot please God nor appease God. But The Spirit looks for those that serve in spirit. So what is spiritual service? Is it not to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly before God? When I think of God's unconditional love I might compare it with a parent's love for a child. But the Divine love is far better. People are wicked in thought and deed...there is none righteous. But the Spirit makes intercession for our flaws. God remembers that we are but dust and ash. There are a great many people trying to "earn" God's love or "be worthy" of God's love. The concept is so ridiculous it boggles the mind. As if I could make myself somehow "good enough" for God. If I stop to compare that with (How could my child make herself/himself good enough for me to love?) What would THAT take? Love with condition is not love at all. That is a bargain; a deal. You do this and I'll do that. But if we, being wicked, know how to love without condition, how much greater is our Father's love for us? What we want more than anything is appreciation for the love we give. Love cannot be repaid. It is a free gift. We want recognition of the gift and the giver however. We must become as children thanking our Father for the gift of love and forgiveness and remembering the Giver of all things good. That is the highest "service" we can render to God. But secondly would certainly be the respect of His OTHER children and his creation. We should love our brothers and sisters as we love ourselves; going out of the way to demonstrate that love in actions and deeds so that our Father may receive the glory justly due. Service in the flesh should be unto the flesh. Service of God is purely spiritual because God is Spirit and seeks out those who serve Him as such. "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's and unto God the things which are God's." So it is with flesh and spirit. Just my thoughts.

Great rhyming, Mike.

It feels like a personal struggle for you in the balancing act of your faith and the everyday conundrum of your life.
