My Addiction

My Addiction

A Poem by Mike Cole
"

How many of us have found ourselves spending all day in fron tof a computer screen? But what does it all mean? We were created to do something productive with our lives!

"

It’s a cold world out there

I never really understood

Why they call it a man’s world

Until I start to see lives wasted

24 hours

18 spent on the Internet

The rest sleeping

Productivity

Practicality missing

And Mam

I just wanted to say you look pretty

Oh wait let me just Facebook message it

Take away the meaning

And Sir

I just wanted to say your son

His performance was amazing

No wait I don’t want to tell you

Let me Instagram that

Maybe one day it will be something that you’ll look at

And I start to cry out to this world

Cause I know that it’s an addiction

Why go outside

When we can go online and fulfill the next gaming mission

Don’t you think we were made for more than this

Is that what you think He thought about during the crucifixion

Nah bro let’s just look at one more

These pictures

Maybe if I just keep thinking about this girl being objectified

I’ll forget about my problems at home

All of the lies

That I’m told all of the time

And I start to cry out to this world

Cause I know that it’s an addiction

Of something that’s not even nonfiction

Cause in 100 years who will actually care that I spent all my time online

Instead of enriching myself

And maybe trying to do the same for others like I was originally trying

Hey son what have you done today?

Well you see mom I’ve been on the Internet

Is that it

I leave you home for 18 hours and you do nothing productive?

Well I beat that level in Tetris

Isn’t that worth something?

And I start to cry out to this world

Cause I know that it’s an addiction

Spending all of your time doing something that will never satisfy you

Something that will never fall through

And even though the world is lost in this epidemic

Why don’t you be the one to say let us let this madness finish

Because online should be a instrument

Not the cause of a wasted life

So Mom

As to what I did today

I went outside experiencing life

Marveling in creation

Trying to undo the wrongs of this generation

Your words are true. Must budget our time. I take my grand-boys out daily for six hours. Kids to to play in the park or at a lake. I need my computer for writing. Life is testing life and having fun. Can't do this watching a computer screen. Thank you for the excellent poetry and thoughts.

The internet; this to me is the addiction of the generation...and would continue to be for a very long time. If you really look at it though it's more of an awkward way of living an less an unproductive addiction. It so happens the way of living now is different from previous times in history. This as an age of the world wide web, and everyone participates in it...the addiction is just like a said an awkward way of living.
