My best interpretation as to what this suggests is that to "kill people all the time" simply means to "get them to love you." The suggestion as to whether it's a love poem or a linguistic may simply suggest that Fred has got the author under a similar spell that the author has had on other people. In an effort to shake this feeling of being overpowered, the author in turn asserts a dominance to Fred so as to, essentially, have the last laugh in this battle of hearts, wit, and charm. Interesting read.
