Off KilterA Story by K-moYou don't realize how quick life can change in an instant until something flips your whole world upside down.. and for me that happened one typical summer night. I was walking along the road that I grew up on, I had been staying with my parents for a while to rekindle my childhood memories, or more like run away from the struggles of being a young adult in a big city just for a little while. But we can get into that later. I had walked along this road all my life and never had a worry at all, but times have changed since I was a kid and kids these days just look out for number one. I didn't hear them coming until it was too late, it was getting darker and not many cars were out at this hour. Just the occasional hard working citizens heading home from a long days work, to go home and have a family dinner. So I was not expecting the car that was zooming down the road on the wrong side of the road mind you, street racing another car. I heard them before seeing bright lights and then it was darkness. I woke up the next morning connected to a hospital bed. when I looked around there was no one was there in the room with me, not even flowers. I saw nurses and doctors speed walking in the hall, no one as to glancing in my room. So I took that as the perfect opportunity to get out of here, I felt perfectly fine, and to be honest had no clue as to why or how I got here. when I got out of there and out into the open air I looked around and didn't see anything of familiarity, where was I? The sight I saw was a big/ small city with big shiny buildings and fancy cars. People in strange clothes. Everyone kind of looked the same in a way, but oddly different. People were giving me looks as I walked past in my hospital garments. I had to find a place to get some clothes fast, and some answers. I walked to the nearest clothing store and was greeted by an up beat young pretty woman who asked if I needed assistance and she eagerly helped locate the men's clothes department with a toothy smile. I gazed at the many options I had to chose from and when I grazed my arm against one of the shirts I was surprised by the feel of the material. I couldn't really put a finger on it really. I found something that looked somewhat like something I would wear, it's not that I care too much about what I wear but nothing here seemed like me. I went to the changing room and tried on the pair of pants and shirt and was in for a real shock. The clothes were lose when I put them on at first but they slowly seemed to shrink to the point where they were snug. What was going on here. None of this seemed right to me. It seemed like the whole world was off kilter and I had no clue. Not wanting to think about it any more I went to the register to pay for the clothes and thought nothing of it when I handed the lady at the register the money I found in the clothes I found in the hospital room that seemed so familiar and the only thing that made sense to me. But she gave me a look and yanked ruidly at my arm and examined my wrist. "Is this some kind of joke sir? Where is your identification chip?" "My what?!" I asked in pure astonishment © 2014 K-mo |
