The Wolrd in Black and WhiteA Story by K-mo
Have you ever looked around you and really saw the beauty in everything you saw? Have you ever thought to yourself what a world without color, dreams, music, and imagination would be like? Well if you haven't you wouldn't know what it's like to live in my world. My name is Derk and where I am from everyone is taught at a young age that dreams are wrong, that being the same as everyone else is good and no wrong would come of it, and if you ever even think of day dreaming you are to go into the presence of the elders and are put in the prison of your thoughts. You see where I am from being the same as everyone prevents wars and suffering. But I knew ever since I was born i was different than everyone else, I was never one to follow the rules and it has gotten me into some trouble, but if the elders knew that I dream I would be in for it. I can see the world for what it should be. I feel free and I wish I could share my world with someone but no one would ever take the risk of leaving their dull world behind. I can see why people would be worried about being different and there must have been a time where being different was acceptable but what caused us to be this way, why can't we use our differences to our advantage? I often find myself picturing myself turning our world upside down and being a hero, being the one people look up to when trouble strikes. And I wish it would last longer than just when I am asleep at night.
One day when I was at school at lunchtime a man came up to me a grabbed a hold of my arm and started leading me outside of the school, I had no idea what was going on, so many thoughts were swirling in my head I thought I was going to pass out. The man was dressed in a suit and tie and he pushed me into the back of a car parked right outside of the school. Inside the car there was a driver and someone was sitting in the back right next to me. The man got into the front seat and the car shortly sped off. "Do you know why you are in our presence young man?" a deep voice said, coming from the man sitting next to me in the back. "Uh not really." I said stammering a little, I knew it couldn't be something good and I just knew the day would come where my life would be in danger...danger what a word! It's a word no one I'm sure ever heard of, at least not anyone I know of and this word gives me so much excitement. My thoughts were soon interrupted by an ubrupt stop. "Young man, we have been watching you for a very long time and we know that you are not like the rest, you have a defiant side to you and it is starting to get the elders riled up a little. We were sent by the elders to send you to where you won't be of a burden to the elders anymore. A place where the thinkers go." The men then grabbed me by the arms and led me to the very simple looking building. In side there was a long hallway and at the end of it I could see a door, they guided me through this hallway and it seemed like years went by before we reached the door. The whole time my mind was going crazy and I seemed to have lost control of it completely. At the door the men typed in a password and they led me on through to yet another long hallway, this one seemed to be longer than the first. In this hallway my mind was still very much in hype mode, but it also had a numb feeling to it and I just couldn't describe the feeling. When we reached the door I was very tired, the men practically had to drag me into yet another hallway but this one was shorter and in this hallway all I could feel was a numbness in my head, I seemed to completely lose all emotion and all thought process all together. The men opened what seemed to be the last door and they let go of me. I instantly fell to the ground and felt the soft earth as face planted into the sandy ground below me. I blacked out for who knows how long, but was awaken by a gentle hand on my shoulder and the soothing voice of a young woman asking if I was alright. I opened my eyes to see the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, she had eyes as blue as the ocean and hair as bright as the sun. I then looked at my surrounding to see a desert of sand as far as the eye could see. I could see nothing else except this young woman who was looking at me with her kind face. "Where am I? I asked, not recollecting how I got to such a place as this. "This is the prison of your thoughts, it's the place where all thinkers are banished for as long as they know how to think. What you see here is what your mind draws up of what prison would look like." she said her face showing some hidden pain, but it soon was gone. "Who are you?" I asked wanting to know more about this young woman. "My name I have long forgotten, for you see I have been here so long I lost all recollection of who I once was and where I once was from. I just live my days in this place not knowing what my day may hold and I lost all desire to." she said simply. I looked at this beautiful woman and soon knew she must understand a person like me, she had the same fate as me in a place like this. I was just glad not to be alone here. I would never know how she could do it for so long. It seemed like time was at a standstill here, the sun never seemed to set here and it didn't seem like there was any change in weather as well. "So what do you do here?" I asked not really sure I wanted to know the answer. "Just live, there is nothing to do because I never get hungry, never tire so I basically wander into nothingness. I never expected to see another, but then out of nowhere there you were." she said smiling sweetly, and that is when I knew I never felt as alone as she must felt and I could see the longing for friendship in her eyes. I soon grew tired of this place, I kept trying to remember how I got here but as quickly as a spark of remembrance came it was as if it were erased from my mind. I never felt so thoughtless. It was as if a force was eating away at my mind leaving an empty shell. I had to find away out of here and I was going to take with me.So I told her of my plan and she just looked at me as if i were an idiot. "You have no idea how many times I tried that very thing myself, I don't see anyway out of here." she said. "well with the both of us I see no failing." and I extended my hand out to her and she hesitantly took my hand and gave it a shake. So with that we started walking further into this endless place of sand and the further we went it felt as if we were heading nowhere. There was nothing to see to show how far we had walked and I kept tripping on things that I couldn't see. And when I glanced over to the woman she had no struggle at all walking. "Why are you not tripping on anything?" I asked "I don't know." she said. I just couldn't understand it, then out of no where I felt as though I were falling off the edge of the earth and it got pitch black. I seemed like I was falling for an eternity before the falling feeling ceased and the darkness turned into brightness. I sheilded my eyes with my hand and let my eyes adjust to the change in light. And when they did I was in a room that looked like a classroom and was surrounded by men sitting in desks and standing in front was a man that was surprisingly familiar. "Young man, do you know who you are and who you are in the presence of?" the man standing at the head of everyone asked. "Well son? Do you?" he pressed. "No I'm afraid I do not." I said searching my blank mind for any lingering memory. But all I could see was a desert of sand and the sweet face of a beautiful young woman walking by my side so free. "I am the Senior elder of the place you reside, and we sent you away so that you would see the dangers that a young man such as yourself were causing. You see we like the way we live as we're not going to let you destroy what order we have here." And as if a trigger was pulled inside my head, I could remember everything. The world where everyone is the same, no imagination, no colors, and non dreams and music. How I was led through hallways that sucked all my thoughts away. What do you want me to do? And what dangers do I cause that you speak of" I asked "Well I see you got your memory back then did you? We want you to be like the rest. If one person starts to think like you soon more after will follow in your lead. And that would be no good for us now would it?" I saw the snear on his face as if he were trying to rub me the wrong way. " Son..." I interrupted him shouting "My name is not Son, it's Derk." "Okay Derk, we do not speak of such things. we simply get rid of the problems that are in our way and move forward living a better life than a dreamer like you could ever dream up." he said "Well dreamers like me make the world what it should be. and there is no way you could ever stop me." I said with my chest out and my head held high. "With that being said, I guess the only thing we can do is send you back to where we found you." And suddenly I felt as though I were weightless, I was being lifted into the air and I kept getting higher and higher until I was back in darkness once again. © 2013 K-moAuthor's Note
