![]() Chicago RhythmA Poem by Kelly MarieChicago Rhythm (4-4-09)
Words spoken from a hospital bed, A forgotten name Who had no hair on her head Yet no tears in her eyes I was curious so I asked her about her life And she replies; I was born and raised In the heart of the city of Chicago And I'd go back, only if my conclusion Was an illusion that I'd step out and fall. See my ankles give in too quickly And my knee's well, they ain't what they use to be. If age wouldn't bound me To it's very heavy ball and chain of confusion, Makes it very hard for me to contain Any information in my mind. So allow me to reframe To my younger days cause, you see Age ain't nothing but a number And No! I don't wish I were younger 84 years of age and still kicking So don't get in front of me I was destined to keep going You see, that is why I am still here So take your limitations and walk on another road Because this one is taken No, I'm not faking; I still remember When I would wake up early just to see the sun rise And go to sleep at night with the sounds of traffic To be my only lullabies. There was no need to cry,In this city I knew God was with me, Even when things weren't pretty. Sure, the crime rates were up, But that did not bring me down. I saw frowns Walking by, and standing on Street corners Old age seeks through Their eyes And glides Down to their feet, Yet they stand with Dignity. Things you wouldn't normally see You do in Chicago. The city of Age and art I know this heart Will still continue to beat When mine has shut down I will remember The Chicago rhythm That has moved me, And kept me young But also has helped me grow And this is what I'd like people to know
