Who am I? I am a poet. If I’m not a poet, then I don’t know who I am. I fit well with this category, because a poet’s heart never stops beating. A poet never stops caring. Never stops. Even when my breath stops my heart will still be there; it will leave impressions in peoples minds that nothing can take place of… Poets’ thoughts are always there too. A Poet never stops thinking. They could look at a trashcan and come up with a whole story about it. A true story. They could look at a window screen, and come up with the same thing. Because, see, a poet thinks. A poet thinks, a poet wonders, and that’s what I do. All day. Every day. I think. I wonder.

I wonder where would I be, if poetry didn’t take control of me, would it have had appeared in life somewhere else down the line? I don’t know. I don’t think so, see I wouldn’t be doing anything. I’d still be living home with my momma, yeah, still living home with my momma. And I don’t want to do that, not that I don’t love my momma, I do, but college is a stepping-stone that I needed to grow. And writing… gives me freedom.

Writing is free, and I’m a free person. You can tell me what to do, and I’ll listen. You can tell me what to do and I won’t. It depends on how I feel. It depends on my heartbeat and the rhythm of my soul. And that’s what I listen to. Other people, non-poets they don’t know what to listen to.

Sometimes they listen to their minds. Sometimes they listen to their hearts, sometimes. Sometimes they listen to their stomach. Sometimes they listen to their feet. Sometimes they listen to the smell, the sight, the touch, the voice. See me, I don’t have a choice; I listen to my soul�"that’s why I am a poet.
