Nurse, Nurse!

Nurse, Nurse!

A Poem by Klyn
"

So, I had a rough night at work

"

Nurse, nurse! Am I dying? Yes.
Don't leave, don't go away
Forgotten, alone
Don't worry, I will stay
Nurse, nurse paging stat
To this patient, this room
For this and for that
IV infiltrates, suctioning
And pills galore
No nurse, don't stop
We need so much more
I'm lonely, I'm sick
I'm desperately ill
Fluff my pillow, my blanket
Get rid of that chill
Empty my bedpan, my basin
My catheter bag
Document every single
Thing that I had
Not just me, oh no
But 55 more
My life depends on you
I fell on the floor
I'm hungry, I'm hot
Fresh water please
I'm hurting, in pain
Please put me at ease
I'm bleeding profusely
I'm vomiting corn
My bed needs changing
My bandage is worn
The Doctor is here
Take his orders too
I'm sorry there's all of us
And there's only you
Nurse, nurse I'm dying
Don't go away
Okay, I'll stay with you
Together we'll pray
Document, flow sheets
Charting some more
Narcotics to count
Don't touch that, it's sore
Gloves, hand washing
And then some Purell
If only you knew the
Stories these hands could tell
Nurse, nurse, come quick
They are almost gone
I run to you, I'll hold you
I'll sing you a song
It's quiet now
Only a minute though
My shift isn't over
There's more to bestow
Nurse, nurse!  I need you NOW
To comfort me, bathe me
Wipe off my brow
An eight- hour shift that leads
Into ten
Go home for fourteen and
Do it again
Clock out, walk out
The sun hurts my eyes
Driving home I still hear
Their deafening cries
Nurse, nurse! Am I dying?  Yes.

Wow, I have family members in the nursing profession. I have heard form them similar emotion, just not expressed so well. You might just have the anthem for all the overworked, under paid, never tiring (or at least seeming that way) people the world counts on.

My hat's off to you and all that you do!
