Once Upon a Summers EveA Poem by Kita Tataki (Emily Conn)This is my first poem for NaPoWriMo, which is national poetry writing month. The first topic was Fantasy, so this is mah poem.Once upon a Summers eve, without a clouded sky The tinkling call of water drops from a shrouded wood nearby. Soft footsteps fall upon the grass, the dewed soldiers bending As fleeting feet went swiftly by, the maiden still descending. She gathered up her skirts and fled, sliding towards the forest Until she reached the brink of the trees and stared into the darkness. A sweet sound greeted her eager ears and she gasped to the eerie tune She stumbled forth, her fabric catching upon a barbed root But she walked on, oblivious, entranced by the sound of a lute. At once the trees, so tall and dark, jumped back to show the girl A midnight dance, so wild, so bright, of the olde creatures of the world. A faun danced merrily with an elf, her locks and blue gowns flowing And in the moonlight a mermaid perched in a pool of moonlight, glowing. The faeries grew, their wings so shined, and their tresses filled the space As they whipped back their heads and let forth a song that only faeries could make. The jubilant song spread over the wood and more creatures came piling in Eager to join the song and praise, and the mythical dancing spin. Out poured the centaurs, with stringed instruments (some pounded away on the drums) And the moonlight surged and the trees whispered and the music soon turned to a hum. All eyes fell to the maiden, whose shock and delight were now seen And the creatures of lands beyond our own grew expressions quite cold and mean. “Onward!” They yelled, “Beware! Now charge! This child is not of our own! She has seen our secret and shared in our songs; this child must be turned to stone.” Her eyes grew wide and fear slid up her throat, the music died away, And as she turned on heel to run, she heard the mermaid say- “Why must she leave? What harm has she done? The music was calling her soul, Dear centaur kings, can you not see, the child is merely a foal?” The maiden had stumbled, and now looked with fear into the eyes of the beasts Who snorted and stomped and lost their beauty as their multitudes increased. A faerie stepped forward and uttered some words, casting a spell with her dust And the child once shivered, then stared at the sky, her face no longer nonplussed. “So what have you done?” was the call from the crowd as they sauntered back to the small clearing “Make room for one more, then strike up your tune, this child is not interfering, She is now one of us- see how her wings grow!- glimmering green and some purple She’ll make a fine faerie, instead of a stone!, now step back and open the circle.” So once upon a Summers eve, when maidens hear fine tunes, Follow the sound, and follow your heart; become one with the celestial moon. © 2011 Kita Tataki (Emily Conn)Author's Note
