DAY IA Chapter by KinnividHmm...“Did it work?” Bright piercing white light was all I could remember. It nearly blinded me and yet it was the first thing I saw when I awoke. At least, I think I had awoken. It was hard to tell. Reflexively, I lift my arm to shield myself but I could barely move it. I couldn’t move anything. I’m screaming white and shedding gray. Everything hurt. My body ached and my eyes only reflected white. A half groan slips between my lips. “She’s reacting,” a voice said loudly. “Kill the lights.” I blink and the world comes into focus. Two men stood in front of me; the taller blonde one was closer. I wouldn’t have guessed that he was a male; he looked more female with the long hair. Each bares a white coat. The green room was tiny and the only furniture was the beige counter near the men and the cold silver table I lied on. I lie in bright blood. I was horizontal to the white tile floor and the restraints were pulled taunt over my bare flesh. My mind kept yelling at me to get up and get out. I stare at the men. The brown-haired shorter one takes a shaky step forward and touches my left arm tenderly. His hand was cold against my hot skin. Dark hazel eyes met mine. “Hey, hun. Do you remember me?” his voice is low and husky. Brown orbs pierce into my own. His voice rattles in my skull and emotions pile up and overspill. Anger. Confusion. Agitation. Violent agitation. How dare he touch me! A growl rumbles deep in my chest and it erupts, scaring the man. It was loud, it was deep, and it was inhuman. He shakes and backs away as far as possible, trying to melt and become part of the wall itself. His eyes betrayed his fear. The creepy one chuckles, “It worked alright.” “O-Oh my g-god,” the man stutters. “She’s ready,” the calm one reaches behind him to the full counter and picks up a long syringe filled with red liquid. He grins beautifully as madness reached his pale gray eyes. His fake grin didn’t suit him. Panic poured into my bloodstream fast enough to make my skin tingle and my whole body felt like endless clipped wires. “It’s okay, sweetheart,” he says in a light chirpy tone I immediately distrusted. “It’ll make more sense when you wake up.” He takes two steps and the needle pinches my right arm. Almost as fast as my panic attack, I feel the Benadryl start spreading through my body. For some reason losing days to a freaking needle irked me. I growl louder and start thrashing against my binds. The younger man cowers on the floor in absolute fright as the other stood there with his arms crossed watching me with amusement. A sudden cold wind swishes through the room, whirling all the papers and silver needles in every which way. Glass smashed against the floor and it leaked black and red. The top restraint snaps off and I lurch forward, grabbing the half-full needle out of my arm and hurling it at the b*****d. My legs buckle as they try in vain to snap the bottom restraint off. He smiles as it crashes over his head, dosing him, making him bleed. “C’mon honey,” he mocks, “You can do better than that. Show me how angry you are.” I am free and I step onto the liquid floor. I sway unsteadily on my feet. My mind swims around and my vision fogs. The blonde man chuckles darkly. “A-aren’t you g-gonna s-s-stop her?!” the man on the floor pants. I step forward and the man shrinks back. I don’t know what I’m going to do now. Get out! My conscience screams again. The tall man glances down at him. He laughs, “Rookie. She’s not going to do anything.” Sleepiness overrides my urge to flee. My arms slap uselessly to my sides. I sway tipsily as my eyelids grow heavy and threaten to close, to return to the darkness. “That’s it,” the blonde murmurs as my eyes close halfway. “She’s special, this one.” “What do you mean?” the brunette slowly stands up and watches me with awe. My eyes close firmly now; I faintly hear the reply before sleep claims me entirely. “Hey Lily. Wake up.” “Hmm?” I mutter. I struggle to remember what had happened as I open my eyes. I saw a girl on the edge of my bed not much older than seventeen. I give a short start at her red eyes- literally; they were completely red- and groan loudly as my head bumps the wall. I sit up slowly and study the girl. Her strawberry blonde hair waved past her waist in a light braid. Her skin was a light tan and she had a tattoo of black flames burning all the way up her right arm. She wore a simple red dress. She smiles at me. “Welcome to Lakeside, Lily,” she greets. Memories arise of that green room with the two men rush through my mind and I shudder slightly. “I’m Alessandra but I’d rather you’d call me Alessa. You’re my new roommate; thank the gods, I’ve been praying for one. Did they- Why are you staring at me like that?” “Y-your eyes,” I stutter. “They’re-“ “Didn’t they tell you anything? I know I have red eyes. A certain color equals a certain kind of power. I can control fire.” She holds up her hand and blue flames tip each fingernail. It doesn’t burn her but it seemed that her skin vibrated off it. She quickly shuts it off. “Of course I’m not the only one who can do this. I’ve never seen your color before though. What can purple eyes do? I’m curious.” She scoots closer to me, her face bright and eager. I fidget with my fingers because I honestly had no idea what the hell she was ranting about. “B******s,” she mutters suddenly, “Why in the name of Ra do they not tell you?” she reaches over the dark nightstand next to my bed and hands me a round handheld mirror. “Take a look.” In the reflection I saw straight black hair reaching a bit past small shoulders and tanned skin. But the eyes- my eyes- were pure violet, just as Alessa said. I lay the mirror on the nightstand facedown, feeling a little uneasy. She seems to see my discomfort. “It’s not bad once you get used to them,” she says softly. “What happened to me?” I ask and peer up at her. She blinks as if startled by my question. “Clay has to tell you. I wasn’t there when you were brought in.” “Clay?” “He’s the head, the big guy, the boss; whatever you want to call him. He was the one who created all of us.” “How many?” “A little less than a hundred I believe.” “What am I?” “We have dinner in an hour. You can clean up in there,” she points to an open bathroom door. I stand up unsteadily and walk into the room easy enough. A floor length mirror faced the shower and I gasp loudly at my reflection. My face was clean but the rest of my body was splattered with shiny blood and black stuff stuck onto my left breast. Those b******s didn’t bother to clothe me. I hop in the shower and tried to rid myself of everything that clung to me. The black stuff seemed to be part of my skin because it wouldn’t come off when I scrubbed it. Once I was done Alessa showed me my closet. I had everything but it was all in shades of violet. I step out in a light purple flowing dress and Alessa waits by the door in a similar red-orange one. I follow her down a white hallway into a full cafeteria. Teenagers sat and talked with one another quietly. All of them dressed in one color only- apparently to match their eyes. I only took one step into the room when Alessa’s arm cuts me off. I turn to her and hear a loud shout that turns everyone’s heads. “Number II! Put the knife down!” © 2012 KinnividAuthor's Note
