CookingA Story by Kimberly She was standing at the stove boiling lemons and ginger for the rice when her parents came home. She blushed, but they’d already heard the music playing on the computer and it was too late now so she sang along. “The ballet was sublime,” her father said. “What’s for dinner?” he asked her mother. Her mother grumbled and started dinner. The girl’s mood was reflected in the metal backsplash, in the lemons, in the music. Her mother made tuna casserole. “Your sister was the lead,” her mother said. The girl nodded as the water boiled over. © 2011 Kimberly |
