Dreams
Fire, a forge, hammer blows on an anvil, the hiss of metal as it is quenched in water. Lightning sears his eyes. Arrows fall from no-where. A sword flashes. Thunder assaults his ears. Fingers deftly strumming a lute. A woman dancing. “Khrinn.”
Men running, soldiers, archers firing, magicians casting, priest’s healing. Lightning. Death. Pain. Thunder. Power flows through him, his voice destroys their weapons, sends them running in fear. A woman dancing, elfin features, long dark hair, smiling, smiling, laughing. “Khrinn.”
Oceans surf. Misting, misting. River flows to it. Nymph’s blade sings. Blood. Fire. Village on fire. Fight. Run. Lightning sears his eyes. Gnoll cries in triumph. Holds it’s prize high. Searing light. Pain. A woman dancing, smiling, smiling at him, laughing, fingers deftly strumming a lute, his lute, his fingers. Long dark hair, dancing, laughing, smiling. Joy. “Khrinn.”
Great trees towering, sunlight dapples the forest floor. Kobold jumps from behind a tree, pokes at him with a spear. Power flows, his voice shatters its weapon, the weapon splinters into it, it bleeds, dies. Thunder deafens him. Fire, campfire, music, a woman dancing, smiling, laughing. Big arms, crush him, he squeezes back. Friends. “Khrinn. Soulless.”
A forge, shaping armor, metal hisses in water, hammer, anvil. Weapons, training, fighting, victory, death, sorrow, loss. Woman dancing, elfin features, she smiles at him, touches his face, he grins, fingers strumming his lute. Lightning strikes. Thunder rolls. Archers fire, assassins appear, strike, disappear. Priest collapses in exhaustion, man at his feet sits up. “Vengeance. Khrinn.”
Traveling, walking, running, fighting, playing, fingers moving, deftly, woman dancing, smiling, laughing, long hair, elfin features, touches his face, an ogre’s club racing toward her head.
“Nooo…” Khrinn awakens with a strangled cry. His body shaking, he feels tears streaming down his face. He sobs, head in his hands. He feels great loss, great fury, but his dreams already fade, he cries. “Why? Who am I?” He sobs again. “That is a question I would’st very much like to have answered.” He looks up to see Halner gazeing at him. He wipes his eyes, a smile beginning to form, “Your awake Halner, I, I’m sorry, I must have dozed off. Are you feeling ok?” “Aye, a bit worse for wear methinks, but I am not dead. What did’st thou see happen?” “Ah…” Khrinn rubs the tears from his face, “You were working your spell…” “Scrying” “Yes, your scrying, and I saw the effect comeing from you, and clouding about my head, then a blue and purple glow surrounded you, and you were thrown against the wall. After that, it seems your privacy enchantments were all broken. Sound came in from the common room, I called to Saldor for help, and we moved you up here.” “All mine enchantments?” “Yes, Saldor said all of them.” “I shall hope it is just the enchantments here in The Silent Nightingale, If all mine enchantments are broken, it will take years to replace them. No matter, I shall find that information in the morning.” “Oh…” says Khrinn, pulling Halner’s mirror from his belt and handing it to him, “I picked this up for you.” “Good! Thank thee, the looking glass is not easily replaced.”
Halner eases himself into a sitting position with a groan “Ah, these bones don’t take to being thrown against walls like they used to.” He looks back to Khrinn, “Thine dreams were vivid for thee. Thou were’t thrashing and groaning quite a bit. Hand me that pitcher, Jerib, knowing Saldor, it is full of water.” Khrinn brings the pitcher of water to Halner, who takes it and drinks deeply from it. “Much better.” He says when he is done. “Thou art still much of a conundrum Jerib, Thou art also protected from scrying, and not from another enchanter, thine protection is divine.” “You mean the Gods stopped you from seeing?” “Aye, that is exactly what I mean.” Halner says with a grunt. “Thou art a dark blot in the world, Jerib, thine soul is not in thine body, and the Gods don’t mean for me to understand why.” Khrinn nods slowly at this. “I do know this Jerib. The Gods themselves are the power in your name. They have plans for you, great plans.”
Khrinn sighs, “Perhaps I will remember someday, perhaps my dreams won’t fade so quickly.” Khrinn looks up at Halner and says, “Saldor asked me to come get him when you woke.” “He did’st did he? Well, thou ought not to keep him waiting then. I’ll be fine.” Khrinn smiles and nods, then walks out to get Saldor.
