Mind Chasing FeetA Poem by Kevin Reader12.28.2007 (801 ohio, urbana) mind chasing feet Armed with gloves, capped with mittens. I set out today, to go for a run. The air was cold, iced over with what forecasters would call a wintry mix. Soon after my first few paces, I realized: this run was set to take me out. It seemed as though my feet were guiding me. A patterned beat of feet grinding against concrete. Memories that only muscles know of. My feet took me on a journey through memories that my body had not lived in for seemed centuries. Each footprint that I left behind on this icy day, with them stayed memories, thoughts: proposed dreams. It was if my feet were forcing my mind to say goodbye. But amongst the vivid reliving of moments past, I was able to say hello to someone who had been misplaced, me. There I lay stretched out galloping in a summer sun across a flowery field that chirped with a summer wind. Hello me, I called out between beats. Hello you, I stammered back between breaths. As we greeted, our footsteps aligned in paced out distance, the shadow of a former self entered into a body that still exists. Although that trek on a December day ended long ago, I was armed with my own presence I was able to say goodbye. I was able to say, hello. Kevin M. Reader
