Smoke Rings

Smoke Rings

A Poem by Kevin Holloway
"

Poem inspired by the motto "you are your own God"

"
We drift like smoke rings
Birthed from a lit cigarette

We rise as they do high
Into a never-ending void

We open like smoke rings
Who diffuse with time's touch

We follow the wind's path
Into an expanding cradle

And so life is a lit cigarette
Releasing its smoke, its children
We, who stretch our arms
Toward the highest cloud

Life a toxic pleasure gun
Triggered by a spark of want
Does deliver its promises
And devotedly drains itself

For we are its reason for being
We are its victim and its master

Drifting like smoke rings
From the cigarette we have lit.

I really enjoyed this (like all of your works) and I think you chose an excellent metaphor. This metaphor of smoke is relatable in the way that it can either mean the end of someone, choking them in their final moments, or it can represent release from the world. I love that there are so many ways to look at this.
Great poem. :)
