LimboA Story by Kevin RogersMy twist on Dante Alighieri's "Limbo"I wake in a cool subway station, I am lost in a crowd of strangers when something catches my eye. It's a face I've only seen in photographs a presence I've only known in stories, it's my grandfather. He signals me over with a grin and I stumble towards him. "Grandfather where are we?" I ask. "We are stuck in limbo my son, all of these strange souls sit in this station waiting for a train that never comes." he then explained. I then glance over to see some of my favorite writers and artists, Bob Dylan, Hunter Thompson and Ernest Hemingway. They stand in the distance and as hard as I try to listen for their words it is useless, they are lost in the sea of sound surrounding me. That's when I asked my grandfather "How is this punishment? There is so much I've wanted to learn from these people my entire life and now I have the chance!" Then my grandfathers grin collapsed in on itself,"I'm sorry my boy but all of this information and opportunity you speak of is valueless here, anything you learn anything you see can't be used for you may never leave and you may never create again." That's when I finally understood Dante's reaction to hell, my grandfathers words left me shellshocked. I picked up my things walked onto the tracks of the railroad and stared blankly down the tunnel waiting for my train to come and take my life or whatever it was called away. Since that day I have not moved and my train has never come. © 2012 Kevin RogersAuthor's Note
